Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has stated that he will not interfere in Thailand's decision to send Uighurs back to China, emphasizing that the issue falls under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense. The Ministry of Interior continues to enforce strict measures for the safety of tourists, following warnings issued by various embassies to their citizens traveling to Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin highlighted the Ministry of Interior's ongoing efforts to maintain social order across various sectors, including entertainment venues, drugs, human trafficking, firearms, gambling, and dealing with influential figures. The ministry requires monthly KPI reports from all levels of administrative mechanisms to ensure law enforcement. Anutin clarified that this process is routine and aims to encourage diligent monitoring rather than exert pressure. Each province is expected to adhere to specific directives within 30 days, a responsibility overseen by the new permanent secretary, especially focusing on drug-related issues in line with the prime minister's expedited policies.
Addressing concerns related to recent embassy warnings, Anutin urged the media to remain calm, citing the example of Pai District in Mae Hong Son Province, where initial reports of disorder proved unfounded upon investigation. He emphasized the importance of peaceful tourism and cultural preservation, noting that local tourism organizations, with support from the Israeli ambassador, have cooperated effectively, dispelling any security concerns.
Anutin stressed the necessity of maintaining peace and order in tourism, warning business operators against illegal activities that could tarnish Thailand's tourism image. He asserted that tourists continue to have confidence in Thailand, and it is vital to provide them with safety and hospitality to ensure their return.
When questioned about the potential impact of the Uighurs' repatriation on tourism, Anutin reiterated his non-involvement, as the matter is solely managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense. He affirmed that the Ministry of Interior's role is to ensure provincial compliance with laws to maintain peace, with regular orders issued to address emerging issues and uphold national order.
