Bangkok: The Anti-Corruption Division has conducted raids on two renowned temples located in the Phasi Charoen area and Chachoengsao, following the discovery of a secret clip involving a layperson and an assistant abbot. The authorities have urged the implicated individuals to disrobe to prevent further damage to the religious institution.
According to Thai News Agency, the Anti-Corruption Division police initiated discussions with senior monks at both temples after the clip surfaced on a female devotee's mobile phone. The clip, which shows the assistant abbot engaging in inappropriate conduct, is considered a grave breach of monastic discipline. The police have been negotiating with the monks to disrobe voluntarily to uphold the sanctity of the religion.
The first raid took place at a temple in the Phasi Charoen area, where officials aimed to confront the 60-year-old assistant abbot. However, upon arrival, authorities found that the monk had already left the temple and is believed to be in Chiang Mai Province. Efforts are currently underway to locate him.
A monk at the temple expressed surprise at the situation, stating that he was unaware of the assistant abbot's whereabouts, as the latter was not in his hut at the time.
In Chachoengsao's Mueang District, authorities searched the quarters of another assistant abbot. However, the monk was not present, as he had reportedly left for an external engagement. Officials are now waiting for an opportunity to speak with him.
