The E-WAY bus, with 800 units already in operation that have completed 42 million km, is renowned for its technical qualities and economic performance. Posyandus told to provide animal proteins as supplementary food

The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has recommended that animal proteins be provided as supplementary food (PMT) to infants and toddlers at integrated health posts (posyandus) instead of biscuits that are high in carbohydrates.

“We have already prepared the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) to provide additional food at posyandus. The fund will be managed by local governments, especially those with low financial capacity,” BKKBN Head Hasto Wardoyo informed after attending the agency’s national work meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has directed that supplementary foods provided to children aged over six months include local products that contain a lot of animal proteins.

Earlier, the supplementary food provided by posyandus was in the form of biscuits. In fact, during his monitoring of stunting reduction acceleration, the President said that the consumption of biscuits may not be sufficient to prevent stunting.

“President Jokowi asked us to provide local foods, not (those made by) manufacturers, without containing a lot of carbohydrates. This is very important because local products are not expensive. At least one egg a day is good, catfish is also good. The public does not have to buy tuna or salmon; just buy mackerel with the same nutrition content,” Wardoyo said.

Regional governments have been provided the DAK for supplementary food, he added. The funds have been distributed under the supervision of regional teams for the acceleration of stunting reduction (TPPS).

The teams comprise deputy regional heads, cadres of family welfare movement (PKK), sub-district heads, and village heads, he said.

In addition, supervision at the sub-district level is also being ensured through the obligation to hold one mini-workshop at least once a month. Meanwhile, at the district level, audits of stunting cases must be intensified twice a year, Wardoyo added.

He also asked the public to pay attention to measuring children’s growth and development at the posyandus. It is hoped that the 300 thousand posyandus across the country will have anthropometric devices to measure children’s height/length and weight to facilitate data collection.

“We want all posyandus throughout Indonesia to have the same measurement method. Many regional heads protested the result of the Indonesian Nutrition Status Study (SSGI) released by the Health Ministry because they thought their stunting data was lower than those released. Each region uses its own measurement method,” Wardoyo explained.

President Widodo also emphasized that starting this year, he will not provide assistance in the form of biscuits at posyandus.

He directed all parties to encourage the provision of local foods and provide animal proteins to children to prevent stunting.

In addition, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that he had been warned by experts to stop providing biscuits at posyandus and encourage the fulfillment of children’s nutrition through animal proteins.

He was also advised to accord priority to providing eggs, fish, or chicken as animal protein sources, considering that one of the periods when stunting occurs is when children are above six months old and need to consume supplementary food.

Sadikin further explained that based on the SSGI data, the stunting rate slid to 21.6 percent in 2022 from 24.4 percent in 2021.

Minister urges DPR to ratify bill on domestic worker protection

Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Bintang Puspayoga has urged the House of Representatives (DPR) to ratify the Domestic Worker Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) into law without delay.

“We encourage the DPR to bring (the bill) to a plenary meeting and make RUU PPRT an initiative of the DPR,” she said in a statement received here on Wednesday.

Considering the previous experience in passing the Sexual Violence Crime Law (UU TPKS), differences in opinion during discussions are normal, she said.

However, what is important is finding ways to accommodate the interests of all parties, especially domestic workers, in terms of recognition and protection, she said.

Puspayoga said the government will encourage joint commitment and political work with the DPR and civil society to oversee the ratification of RUU PPRT.

In addition, the task force for the acceleration of deliberations on the bill will also need to immediately map out steps and strategies to push its ratification.

Puspayoga said the bill aims to protect domestic workers as part of efforts to uphold human rights principles.

The articles in the bill contain agreements and cooperation regarding relations between employers and domestic workers as well as the supervision of recruiters, the minister added.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo said that the government is committed to and is striving for the protection of domestic workers.

According to him, the number of domestic workers is estimated to have reached four million. They are vulnerable to losing their rights as workers.

To accelerate the stipulation of the Domestic Workers’ Protection Law (UU PPRT), the president has asked the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the Ministry of Manpower to coordinate with the DPR and all related stakeholders.

Govt to hold international events to meet tourist arrival target

The Indonesian government will hold several international events to achieve this year’s target of 7.4 million international tourist arrivals, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno has said.

“The target has been doubled (this year). Last year, it was 3.6 (million), and this year, (it) is 7.4 (million). One of the strategies (for meeting the target) is holding international-scale world-class events,” he informed after attending a limited meeting with President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace here on Wednesday.

According to the minister, the government is carefully calculating the budget for holding international events so that it will be proportional to foreign exchange earnings from tourism.

The government is targeting to earn foreign exchange of US$500 million from sports tourism, he informed.

In 2023, at least four international-level sports events will be held in Indonesia.

The minister said that in late February, the F1 Powerboat championship in Toba Lake, North Sumatra, is expected to attract 25 thousand tourists and drive the economy around the area.

Then, preparations have been made for the U-20 FIFA World Cup, which is expected to help Indonesia improve its achievement in football and seize economic impact, he added.

Further, the FIBA World Cup, which will be participated by eight countries, will be held at the Indoor Multifunction Stadium, Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta.

Next, the ANOC World Beach Games are scheduled to be held in Bali in August 2023, which will see participation from 205 countries.

According to Uno, those events could directly affect tourists’ length of stay and have a positive impact on the economy.

“This is what we expect will be able to accelerate recovery, especially in the tourism sector,” he added.

Earlier, the minister said that his ministry is optimistic that the number of tourists will increase this year, considering that the government has revoked its public activity restrictions (PPKM) policy.

“The revocation of PPKM comes as a breath of fresh air for tourists. Psychologically, it will affect tourists, with the assumption that the status of the COVID-19 (pandemic) in Indonesia is very under control,” he observed on Tuesday.

BNPB prepares ground, air operations to prevent forest fires

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has prepared a number of measures ranging from ground to air operations to prevent forest and land fires in Indonesia.

Head of the BNPB Suharyanto said that the agency will focus efforts on six provinces that regularly experience land and forest fires—Riau, South Sumatra, Jambi, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan.

“But it does not rule out the possibility of forest and land fires in other provinces. We will also take precautionary measures,” he informed at a press conference on “Preparation for the 2023 Land and Forest Fires” in Jakarta on Wednesday.

A ground operation will be carried out to extinguish hotspots before they are enlarged, he said. This activity will be carried out together with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), and personnel from the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

The air operations supported by BNPB will involve the use of patrol helicopters and water bombing helicopters, which will douse water with chemical mixtures, to extinguish fires immediately, he informed.

Apart from that, the agency will also utilize weather modification technology to cause rain and put out fires.

The utilization of weather modification technology, formerly known as artificial rain technology, is a part of efforts to prevent forest and land fires by wetting peat, Suharyanto informed. This method was found effective in handling forest and land fires in 2020.

Meanwhile, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya emphasized that the government will not condone private companies that cause forest and land fires.

The government will immediately issue a warning to a company if a hotspot is found, she said.

“Law enforcement methods like that are the best. So, if a fire is detected on private land, the government will give a warning to the company,” she added.

Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that forest fire disasters were expected to increase this year and had the same potential as those recorded in 2019.

The phenomenon of La Nina, which is weakening and entering a neutral condition, can cause a decline in rainfall and increase the potential for the development of hotspots in forest areas and on land. In fact, the neutral condition is very close to and almost coincides with weak El Nino conditions.

BMKG has predicted reduced rainfall this year compared to the one recorded last year and three years ago, even though currently, the peak of the rainy season is still on.

PUPR Ministry looking to complete 13 dams this year

The Directorate General of Water Resources of the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry is targeting to complete the construction of 13 dams in several Indonesian provinces in 2023.

“A total of 13 ongoing (constructions of) dams, God willing, will be completed in 2023,” director general of water resources at the ministry Jarot Widyoko said during a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Wednesday.

He informed that the 13 dams include Keureuto and Rukoh in Aceh, Lau Simeme in North Sumatra, Karian in Banten, Cipanas and Leuwikeris in West Java, Jlantah in Central Java, Pamukkulu in South Sulawesi, Ameroro in Southeast Sulawesi, and Sidan Dam in Bali.

Tiu Suntuk Dam in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Temef Dam in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and Sepaku Semoi Dam in East Kalimantan—which will supply water to Indonesia’s new capital, (IKN) Nusantara—are also targeted to be completed this year.

Meanwhile, the development of 12 more dams, such as Tiga Dihaji in South Sumatra as well as Bener and Jragung in Central Java, will continue into the next fiscal year, or 2024.

In addition, the ministry will build four new dams in 2023, namely Cibeet and Cijurey in West Java, Cabean in Central Java, and Riam Kiwa in South Kalimantan.

Apart from dam construction, the PUPR Ministry will revitalize a number of lakes, such as Lake Toba and Lake Tondano, this year.

A budget of Rp14.04 trillion has been allocated for dam construction and lake revitalization for the whole year.

Earlier, the PUPR Ministry informed that the construction of Sepaku Semoi Dam had reached 82 percent completion.

Head of the ministry’s task force for IKN infrastructure development, Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, said that the dam will be one of the sources of raw water for the new capital city.

The dam will be equipped with water intake facilities and a water treatment plant (IPA). The initial impounding of Sepaku Semoi Dam is targeted to be conducted in June 2023.
