The Job Creation Perppu has absorbed people’s aspiration: Minister

Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah ensured that the government had absorbed the aspirations of various parties in formulating Regulations in Lieu of Law (Perppu) Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation (Ciptaker).

“Before we issued the Perppu, the government, especially the Ministry of Manpower, had carried out socialization and absorbed aspirations in various districts/cities,” she said during the Child Protection Petition Signing event in Central Jakarta, Sunday.

She conveyed that the socialization which was carried out openly and had gone through a long process in various regions in Indonesia involved all related elements.

This includes inviting employers and trade unions to bring together the interests of the two parties, she added.

“Including the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) and our friends from the labor union. We also visited universities and asked an independent institution to conduct a study of the Job Creation Law,” the minister remarked.

From the results of this socialization, the ministry then made improvements to Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation (UU Cipta Kerja) which was previously declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court (MK) in 2021.

“From the results of absorption of aspirations and socialization, the government then formulated the improvements to the Job Creation Law through Perppu Number 2 of 2022,” she continued.

For this reason, Fauziyah said all parties must comply with the Ciptaker Perppu which will be submitted to the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) for approval to become law.

“This law is binding on all citizens, the Perppu will then be approved by the DPR, then the law will be binding on the entire nation,” she noted.

The minister was also reluctant to comment much when asked about the request for judicial review submitted by a number of elements of society to the Constitutional Court (MK).

As with the constitutional mechanism, she stated if people disagree with the decision, they can indeed apply for a judicial review to the MK.

Previously, President Joko Widodo had stipulated and issued Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation, as an urgent need to anticipate global conditions.

The consideration of establishing and issuing a Perppu was an urgent need, in which the government needed to accelerate anticipation of global conditions both related to the economy and geopolitics.

Parents must prioritize nutritious food over snacks: Ministry

The Indonesian Health Ministry appealed to parents to prioritize giving nutritious food to their children, rather than snack products with no safety guarantee for consumption.

“Parents are advised to be careful in giving food for their children, especially because these children are still in growth period. Therefore, healthy and nutritious food must be prioritized over snacks,” the ministry’s head of communication and public service bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said in Jakarta, Sunday.

She addressed that the incident of food poisoning in patients after consuming liquid nitrogen-treated snacks in West Java must become an important lesson for all parents.

Behind its popularity, this snack that uses liquid nitrogen has caused 28 children in West Java to become poisoned after consuming it.

“Currently all patients are healthy because this happened in Tasikmalaya in November 2022 and in Bekasi on December 21, 2022. Yesterday I got a report that all patients are healthy,” she confirmed.

Tarmizi conveyed that parents must be educated regarding their children’s food intake.

“It is also necessary to educate parents that giving food to children should be nutritious and processed in a standard way, not snacking carelessly,” she reminded.

In addition, intensive efforts are also needed to monitor the distribution of food throughout the region.

“We have opened a reporting channel for people who have experienced poisoning due to the liquid nitrogen-treated snacks,” she continued.

The reporting channel can be accessed through the number of the Referral Health Services Work Team at 088215992763 or via email jasakesehatan.rujukanlain@gmail.com.

Earlier, a number of students from Ciawang 2 Public Elementary School, Leuwisari sub-district, Tasikmalaya district, West Java province, were suspected to have suffered food poisoning after consuming snacks infused with liquid nitrogen.

The children reportedly experienced several symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea. They were provided medical treatment at the local community health center.

The ministry had earlier issued a warning on the risk of consuming “ice smoke,” a snack containing liquid nitrogen, after a child in Ponorogo district, East Java province, was reported to have been burnt by a flame that suddenly ignited due to the nitrogen added into his snack.

Eight political parties convey stance on closed-list election system

The elites of eight political parties met here on Sunday to make a joint statement against the implementation of a closed-list proportional election system for the 2024 General Election.

A proposal to conduct a judicial review on the Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Election, especially regarding the provisions on the implementation of an open-list proportional election system, was earlier submitted to the Constitutional Court (MK) with registration number of 114/PUU-XX/2022.

If the judicial review is granted by the MK, there is a possibility that the 2024 General Election may use a closed-list proportional election system.

“Today, we, (the representatives of) eight political parties, gathered for the people’s sovereignty. Earlier, it was agreed that such a meeting will be held periodically to maintain the stance of these political parties,” General Chairman of Party of Functional Groups (Golkar) Airlangga Hartarto stated.

He said the meeting was attended by General Chairman of National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar, President of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Ahmad Syaikhu, as well as General Chairman of Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.

General Chairman of National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan, Deputy Chairman of National Democratic (NasDem) Party Ahmad Ali, Secretary General of NasDem Party Johnny G Plate, and Deputy Chairman of United Development Party (PPP) Amir Uskara also attended the meeting.

There was no elite of Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party showing up at the meeting, but Hartarto said the party had stated that they would follow the agreement of the other seven parties.

Furthermore, he conveyed the five points of the agreement of the eight political parties.

First, they reject a closed-list proportional election system and are committed to maintaining the improvement of democracy in Indonesia which has been carried out since the reformation era (post-1998 era).

“A closed-list proportional election system is a setback for our democracy,” Hartarto remarked.

Meanwhile, he said, an open-list proportional election system is a manifestation of democracy which is in accordance with the people’s sovereignty, as they can choose the candidates proposed by the political parties for legislative members directly.

“We do not want our democracy to collapse,” he remarked.

Second, the eight political parties agree that an open-list proportional election system is the right choice for implementing the election in Indonesia and in accordance with the Decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) Number 22-24/PUU-VI/2008 on December 23, 2008.

“This (open-list proportional election) system has been implemented in three prior elections,” Hartarto noted.

Third, they asked the General Elections Commission (KPU) to continue to carry out its duties as an election organizer by maintaining its neutrality and independence in accordance with statutory regulations.

The eight political parties lauded the government which had allocated a budget for the 2024 General Election, as well as the election organizers, especially KPU, which had continued implementing the stages of the election according to the schedule mutually agreed prior.

“Fifth, we are committed to competing in the 2024 election in a healthy and peaceful manner, while maintaining national unity and integrity, to keep political, security, and economic stability,” Hartarto added.
