Expect better planning for Aceh-North Sumatra PON: KONI

Chairperson of the National Sports Committee (KONI) Marciano Norman has said that he expects better preparations for the 2024/XXI Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) since there is still sufficient time for its implementation.

He made the statement while chairing a plenary meeting of the central executive board of KONI at the Central KONI Headquarters, Senayan, here on Thursday, according to information posted on the committee’s website.

The XXI PON is scheduled to be implemented from September 5–19, 2024.

“With this discretion, I expect for far better planning than the previous PON (in 2021). I am sure that with the experience you have (had in previous PON) and by bolstering our cooperation, God willing, the 2024/XXI Aceh-North Sumatra PON will become a memorable PON,” Norman remarked.

He said that the “Launching and Countdown of the XXI PON” will be held on January 21, 2023, in Aceh province — one day after the inauguration of the chairperson of Aceh provincial KONI, Abu Razak.

A similar event will also be held in Medan city, North Sumatra province, on January 22.

“Let’s strengthen our collaboration to get the best (achievements). To optimize our performance, we must maintain the working pace in our environment. We have to improve the public’s trust toward KONI,” the KONI chairperson remarked.

The KONI plenary meeting also discussed the preparations of the Indonesian contingent for the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games, which will be implemented from May 5–17, as well as the Hangzhou China Asian Games, which have been scheduled from September 23 to October 8.

The meeting also discussed the preparations for various multi-event tournaments that will be held by KONI.

The tournaments include Martial Arts Week, which is planned to be held in Solo city, Central Java province, in June, and Beach Sports Week, which will be held in December.

Furthermore, the implementation of the “2023 KONI National Working Meeting (Rakernas)” and the “National Sports Conference (Musornas)” was also discussed at the plenary meeting.

Head of organizational affairs at KONI Andrie Tardiwan Utama Soetarno proposed that the Rakernas be held in April and the Musornas in July.

Govt plans dams on Timor Island for flood control: NTT

The central government will help the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) government build dams in the northern region of Timor Island to control flooding during the rainy season, Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat has said.

“Regarding the control of rainfall that causes flooding in Kupang district, in the future, the regional government and the central government will prepare a plan for the construction of dams in rivers in the northern part of Timor Island to stem the flow of river water,” Laiskodat informed in Kupang, NTT, on Thursday.

This is related to the government’s efforts to anticipate flash floods, such as those that hit several areas in Kupang district, he added.

The governor explained that dams can help stem river flow and anticipate the overflow of river waters during the rainy season.

“If we are able to control the water flow and stem it, Kupang district will have abundant water reservoirs. Besides preventing flooding during the rainy season, the community will not have water problems during the dry season as well,” he added.

He said that the stored water can be used for the development of the agricultural sector because the construction of dams is beneficial not only for preventing floods but also for agriculture.

“Seeing from the current conditions, we will not build a bridge in the future but we will build a dam. The construction of the bridge will be adjusted to certain conditions and needs,” he disclosed.

The governor also lauded all parties who helped evacuate the community, helped in the construction of disaster posts, and repaired bridges for residents.

Laiskodat said he hopes that the people affected by the disaster can return to activities related to the agricultural business by optimizing the use of existing agricultural land by planting corn.

“The NTT provincial government, through the Agriculture Service, will provide assistance such as seeds and others to support our people,” he emphasized.

7,000 babies dying yearly due to lack of specialists: health minister

At least 7,000 babies die each year of congenital heart disease in Indonesia due to a lack of cardiologists and low capacity for heart surgery, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has said.

“There are around 4.8 million babies born in Indonesia a year. I heard from pediatricians that 1 in 100 of the children born has congenital heart disease. Therefore, every year, there are 48 thousand Indonesian children with congenital heart disease,” he said at the “Health Ministry’s 2022 Performance and 2023 Work Program Press Conference” here on Thursday.

According to his calculations, of the 48 thousand babies born with congenital heart disease each year, the condition of 25 percent, or around 12,500, is critical.

Besides the shortage of heart specialist doctors, Indonesia’s capacity for heart surgery is only around 5 thousand operations, not to mention the long waiting time for such services, the minister added.

As a result, 7 thousand babies cannot be properly and optimally handled. The healthcare system in Indonesia should be able to provide the best service, especially after 77 years of independence, Sadikin said.

“Imagine that our operating capacity is only 5 thousand. So, 7 thousand babies die every year due to congenital heart disease because we do not have enough specialist doctors to perform heart surgery even though we have been independent for 77 years. I feel sorry for our children,” he added.

Sadikin further said that competency-based heart services are not evenly distributed in Indonesia. This is because there are only 40 government hospitals that have a catheterization laboratory (cath lab) to diagnose heart and blood vessel diseases.

Meanwhile, there are only 10 hospitals that can perform open heart surgery in Indonesia. This means that the ability of the health system is not proportional to the number of patients, especially for people with heart disease, stroke, and cancer, he pointed out.

The three diseases are the highest contributors to deaths in Indonesia, he said.

Budi added that hospital financing services have been resolved by the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan).

The health ministry, he said, will focus on increasing health service capabilities as well as ensuring that each health infrastructure is made more adequate to secure public health in the future.

“After solving the problem on the demand side with BPJS Kesehatan coverage, we now have to ensure that the health infrastructure is prepared,” he added.

Merdeka Belajar can respond quickly to change: expert

The Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) program from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) is an education policy that can respond quickly to change, a public policy expert from Trisakti University has said.

“The key to Merdeka Belajar, which differentiates it from previous policies, is collaboration and flexibility in implementation,” Trubus Rahadiansyah said here on Thursday.

He said the ministry’s move to try to reach various groups, not only from large existing organizations, should be appreciated as an effort to gain as much public support as possible for education.

With the rapid development of technology, the burden of advancing education cannot only rest on Kemendikbudristek, he said.

Moreover, he said, Indonesia is still witnessing disparities related to education between cities and regions, including remote areas that have not been exposed to government programs so far.

“Indonesia needs a major transformation; it needs leverage, a leap for equity in terms of knowledge. Knowledge in Indonesia is currently only controlled by certain areas; with Merdeka Belajar, the scope will be wider,” he said.

The existence of several priority programs such as Guru Penggerak (transformational teachers), Sekolah Penggerak (mobilization schools), and the prototype of Kurikulum Merdeka (independent curriculum) is expected to spur the educational transformation process on various fronts.

Kemendikbudristek is seeking to accelerate the digitization of education through the development of several applications that support transparent and accountable learning and school financial management.

In this way, all educational actors in Indonesia can get the same opportunity to access credible information and content.

Trubus said he believes the rejection from some people to Merdeka Belajar is reasonable.

“Some parties are very comfortable with the conditions and loopholes that have been built for decades since there are various potentials for abuse. Digitalization and automation steps in the education system disrupt everything,” he added.

He said he hopes that the public will realize that the transformation process in the education sector cannot be enjoyed in the short term.

Therefore, he asked ministries to increase the socialization of their plans while simultaneously seeking inputs from stakeholders in a proactive manner.

Meanwhile, Head of the East Java Provincial Education Office Wahid Wahyudi emphasized that his office fully supports the Implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka (IKM).

This support has manifested in the form of holding various technical guidances, encouraging mobilizing schools to provide assistance to schools registering for IKM independently, and forming a Mobilizing School Community.

Support has also been provided by empowering existing schools and study groups, such as the Teacher Working Group (KKG), Subject Teacher Deliberations (MGMP), and School Principal Working Deliberations (MKKS), as well as strengthening the learning community ecosystem.

“We will continue to motivate all education units, both public and private, in East Java to register for IKM independently,” said Wahyudi.
