APEC Summit fully adopts Bali G20 Leaders’ Declaration: Minister

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for  Economic Affairs  Airlangga Hartarto has said the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit fully adopted the Bali G20 Leaders’ Declaration.

“The Leaders’ Declaration at the APEC forum fully adopted the Bali G20 Leaders’ Declaration formula, word by word,” Hartarto said in a statement here on Sunday.

He noted that the discussion to reach an agreement for the Leaders’ Declaration at the APEC forum was tough, and in the end, all parties agreed to refer to the Bali G20 Leaders’ Declaration.

This is supported by the back-to-back implementation of these two important world forums, and the declaration that was initiated in Bali which has received approval from 20 member states of G20. Hence, the version was fully adopted at the APEC Forum, Hartarto added.

In the APEC Leaders’ Declaration, APEC economic leaders  agree on a joint commitment to respond to common challenges, among others, to support the reform of the multilateral trading system in order to face various developmental challenges that have arisen, and to strengthen commitment  to address supply chain disruption .
They also agreed to promote strong, balanced, sustainable, and inclusive growth, including supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups, the minister remarked.

“This APEC forum also encouraged multilateralism and supports the results of The WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) to encourage WTO as a platform in the Asia Pacific to equalize trade law rules, because APEC is 60 percent of the world economy or the equivalent of US$59 trillion,” he said.

Furthermore, APEC economic leaders  also encouraged cooperation to connect the digital gap through infrastructure facilitation, as well as increasing expertise and digital literacy and strengthening the agricultural sector to support regional food security.

In the digital field, APEC supported empowerment starting from empowering women and youth, to promoting equality and inclusiveness of MSMEs.

Indonesia also supported the digitization of MSMEs to become part of the global supply chain, Hartarto disclosed.

He stated that this year’s APEC forum was also pushing for sustainable goods and services, which will be brought under the leadership of the United States next year.

Meanwhile, the 2022 APEC Summit also succeeded in agreeing on The Bangkok Goals for the Bio-Circular Green Economy, which is a joint approach to post-pandemic economic recovery that is inclusive and balanced in order to achieve more resilient economic growth and protect the environment.

“Almost all the discussions at APEC have a common thread with those discussed at the G20. One of the strongest common links among ASEAN,  G20, and APEC is togetherness. Together, we will be strong and successful in recovering the global economy,” he concluded.

Papua needs more specialists to improve health services: official

The acting head of Lanny Jaya District in Papua Province, Petrus Wakerkwa, said here on Sunday that the district needed more specialists and therefore he prepared steps to send nine indigenous Papuan doctors outside the province so they could advance their education and become specialists to improve health services in Papua’s remote areas .

The  nine indigenous Papuan  doctors would further advance their education on several medical specialties using the 2023 regional budget, according to Wakerkwa.  The indigenous doctors were selected because they have better access to provide health services to Papuan people in remote areas and they speak the same local languages.

The Lanny Jaya acting head district  informed that the nine doctors will study dentistry, pulmonology, hepatology, and ophthalmology. “(The doctors sent to become)   obstetrics were dispatched earlier,” he noted.

He has said that the government will continue to gradually improve the health services in the district, including increasing the quality of services at the Tiom Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Lanny Jaya District.

“(We will also) bring specialist doctors from Siloam Jakarta,” he continued.

Although currently Tiom RSUD does not have adequate specialist doctors, the local government ensures that the residents will still receive excellent treatment with the same quality as in other regions, since the government has established referral partnerships with some hospitals throughout Indonesia.

Through these referral hospitals, residents of Lanny Jaya District can receive adequate treatment in renowned hospitals in other regions funded by the local government.

“The Healthy Lanny Jaya program has partnerships with (some hospitals such as) Wamena; Jayapura; Dian Harapan and Provita in Jayapura City; Siloam Makassar; Siloam Jakarta; and Gatot Subroto Jakarta,” Wakerkwa informed.

He said that the local government has established cooperation with those hospitals since the region  has limited medical facilities, health equipment, and specialist doctors.

He has ensured that the collaboration which had been implemented since 2018 will continue until 2024.

World Children’s Day as momentum to fulfill immunization rights

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture emphasizes that the commemoration of World Children’s Day which falls on November 20 every year, must become a reminder of the fulfillment of basic immunization rights for children.

“World Children’s Day is a momentum to fulfill children’s rights to basic immunization,” the ministry’s deputy for coordinating health quality improvement and population development, Agus Suprapto, said here, Sunday.

He added that basic immunization was important to provide optimal medical protection for Indonesian children.

“Basic immunization is very useful to protect children from various diseases that can be prevented by vaccination, for example, polio, diphtheria, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, and various other diseases,” Suprapto added.

Basic immunization can also support children’s growth and development to become more optimal, considering that children are the next generation of the nation, he remarked.

“As the nation’s next generation and future leaders, all parties must ensure that our children are able to grow and develop optimally,” he conveyed.

He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic was feared to affect the coverage of basic immunization in the country.

“Thus the commemoration of World Children’s Day can be the right momentum to pursue the target of basic immunization for children and increase the coverage of basic immunization for children in the country,” he said.

Suprapto also stated that the government continued to intensify education and socialization to the public regarding the importance of basic immunization.

“The government has also created a National Child Immunization Month (BIAN) and School Children Immunization Month program to support the acceleration in increasing basic immunization coverage,” he disclosed.

With the common awareness of the whole community to complete basic immunization for children, it is hoped that herd immunity will be achieved according to the target.

“The ministry invites the whole community to protect Indonesian children together through immunization. Please come to the community health center (puskesmas) immediately to get basic immunizations such as polio, DPT-HB-Hib, PCV, and measles-rubella,” he said.

Children’s Day momentum to fulfill right to education: UI Professor

The University of Indonesia’s Professor Lydia Freyani Hawadi said World Children’s Day, which is celebrated every November 20, reminds parents about the importance of fulfilling children’s rights to education.

“World Children’s Day serves as a reminder to parents that under any circumstances a child’s right to a good education must be fulfilled,” said Lydia Freyani Hawadi,  who is more familiarly called Reni, when contacted here on Sunday.

Reni added that for the government, World Children’s Day could be the right momentum to ensure that all children at their early childhood receive education through the One Village One Early Childhood program.

She also added that society also has an important role in efforts to fulfill children’s right to education.

“People around the children will of course be an example and role model for children, so they need to set a good example,” she said.

Various factors outside the children will affect the children’s development.

However, even though children will grow and develop according to the conditions of their time, the assistance of parents and the surrounding community is very much needed.

“The goal is to ensure that children grow and develop based on their religious norms and customs,” she said.

Then, she added that World Children’s Day is also the right momentum to further strengthen child protection programs.

“Child protection programs need to be continuously strengthened, especially for girls so they can be prevented from early child marriage, sexual violence against children, trafficking and pornography,” he said.

This is very important to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to gender equality.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Indonesian Child Protection Institute (LPAI) Dr. Seto Mulyadi also emphasized the same thing that the commemoration of World Children’s Day reminds parents of the importance of fulfilling children’s rights.

“It must be realized that there are a number of basic rights of children that must be fulfilled, including the right to live, to grow and develop, (to get) protection and to participate,” he said.
