Indonesia working to accommodate women workers with special needs

The Presidential Special Staff for Social Affairs, Angkie Yudhistira, has said that Indonesia is trying to accommodate workers with special needs, like her. Yudhistira is deaf.

During a discussion on the West Merdeka 9 Forum (FMB 9), which was accessed online from Jakarta on Monday, she affirmed that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will encourage women with disabilities to contribute, the same way as she was appointed as the Presidential Special Staff for Social Affairs.

“I dedicate my work to the country, to Mr. President, and also to the disabled people in Indonesia to empower each other,” she remarked.

She said that at first, she was hesitant when given the mandate, however, the current government environment was very supportive of her work.

“All of these experiences became memorable and very extraordinary experiences. The Manpower Minister had helped a lot. As a technical ministry, we discussed a lot on how to realize policies and protect disabled employment,” she added.

She also said that the past two years have been difficult for workers with disabilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, a number of government policies have been implemented to provide support, including the successful vaccination program, especially for the disabled group in six regions categorized as red zones. The government has also implemented mass vaccinations for 500 thousand people with disabilities in Indonesia.

In November 2021, Jokowi attended the closing ceremony of the National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) in Papua. Then, on December 1, 2021, he inaugurated the commissioners of the National Commission on Disabilities.

In addition, women with disabilities were also involved in the G20 conference on women’s empowerment and the entire G20 event. Yudhistira said this was a momentum to prove that women with special needs are included.

“The country is actually present to accommodate women with special needs and we can see for ourselves how the President and other ranks in the government show the public regarding their commitment to providing equal opportunities to women with disabilities,” she added.

Gov’t pushes for synergy to end discrimination against disabled women

The government has emphasized cross-sector collaboration for creating innovations for eradicating gender inequality, particularly in relation to women with disabilities in Indonesia.

Presidential Special Staff for Social Affairs, Angkie Yudhistira, said that based on the global gender gap report 2021, Indonesia is ranked 101 out of 156 countries. She delivered the statement during the Merdeka Barat Forum 9 (FMB 9) on ‘Empowered Women, Prosperous Nation,’ accessed from here on Monday.

This fact should serve as a reminder to all policy makers to include men and women equally in all aspects or sectors, she opined.

Yudhistira said that although the policy has been formulated, its implementation has proven challenging. This can be resolved through economic empowerment activities, which aim to improve the quality of life of the community; not only for men, but also for women.

The government itself has put emphasis on cross-sectoral communication within the collaboration. Thus, it is the collective responsibility of the government, private sector, institutions, and community groups to come up with innovations, so that there is no overlap between women and men.

“But if we talk about the overlap among women, especially women with special needs, there is a long way to go because they experience very layered discrimination. They already (experience discrimination as) women, (not to mention the discrimination they experience as people) with disabilities,” she said.

The government has established cooperation with various ministries as technical institutions, as well as regional governments and community groups, which focus on women and vulnerable groups. It is also implementing policies that support women and vulnerable groups.

The measures have been undertaken based on Government Regulation Number 70 of 2019, which mandates that development must involve people with disabilities as a part of vulnerable groups.

The actual practice or implementation has been challenging, but this is where teamwork shines the most, she remarked. Not only involving the government, but also the private sector, community, and institutions, she added.

OJK targets US$1 million of e-commerce transactions at Gernas BBI

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has targeted transactions through e-commerce at the West Sumatra Proud of Indonesian Products National Movement (Gernas BBI) to amount to US$1 million, or Rp15 billion.

“There are some targets, one of them is transactions of (micro, small, and medium enterprises/MSMEs) through e-commerce to reach Rp15 billion,” OJK’s Head of the Sharia Finance Development and MSMEs Task Force, Achmad Buchori, stated in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, on Monday.

The West Sumatran Gernas BBI “Maju Berkah Basamo UMKM” will carry MSMEs together with its launch on Tuesday, April 12, and will be held until June 2022. The OJK will act as the campaign manager.

Buchori said the OJK is optimistic of the transaction target being achieved, as the number of COVID-19 cases have declined. According to his observations, several people are already gathered at crowded locations, especially in Bukittinggi.

Buchori believes the economy of the community has started to move again.

“With digital opportunities through e-commerce, we (the OJK) will work with iDEA (Indonesian E-Commerce Association), and both decacorns and unicorns are all involved. Thus, that is one way to increase transactions,” he stated.

According to Buchori, there will be a different attraction in the West Sumatra Gernas BBI, which is the virtual expo where visitors can view MSME products offered online.

The virtual expo is also equipped with avatars that can facilitate visitors to communicate with MSME players of the Gernas BBI.

“What will be inaugurated later is the virtual export. Visitors do not have to come on-site, but can be virtual. They can even transact for products that are ‘boarding’ in e-commerce,” he explained.

The West Sumatra Gernas BBI is joined by 45 MSMEs curated by OJK, Bank Indonesia, state bank BRI, and government partners.

Four categories of MSMEs in the West Sumatra Gernas BBI are fashion, culinary, agribusiness, and creative industries.
