West Sumatra: BMKG warns of hydro-meteorological disasters post quake

Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, has warned of the likelihood of hydro-meteorological disasters following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck West Pasaman district, West Sumatra, on February 25, 2022.

Communities living near the site of the quake need to watch out for potential hydro-meteorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, or landslides, as the rainy season is still on, she cautioned here on Monday.

People living along the river flowing on the slopes of Mount Talamau must remain more vigilant and alert because disasters can happen at any time, she said.

“The people’s alertness must shift from earthquakes to (hydro-meteorological) disasters due to the rainy season,” Karnawati reiterated. Based on the results of a survey, the sediment from a flood can overflow to a radius of around 200 m from the riverbank, she explained.

Therefore, if it rains, residents living along the river that flows from the upper slopes of Mount Talamau should avoid zones within a radius of 200 m of the riverbank, and the flood situation is expected to happen in March–April 2022, she informed.

Karnawati said that currently, BMKG and the River Basin Agency of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing are continuing to carry out mitigation efforts to reduce the impact of potential hydro-meteorological disasters.

The mitigation endeavors carried out by BMKG include monitoring the weather and rain intensity, she informed. The River Basin Agency will dredge mud sediment caused by any avalanche or earthquake by using heavy equipment so that the river does not overflow into residents’ settlements, she said.

The dredging is aimed at avoiding blockage of sediment material in the river valley that will become dangerous if it stems the flow of water, she added.

BMKG will keep monitoring the weather using radar and provide forecasts and early warnings of extreme weather in the upstream area of the river slopes of Mount Talamau, she said.

“We are also identifying danger zones on the borders of the river and slopes,” Karnawati added.

Further, the development of the earthquake has depleted, meaning that aftershocks are getting weaker and becoming more stable, she informed.

Search for the missing in the landslide in Malampah village, Pasaman district, will resume today, with over 50 rescuers, according to him.

Family Sunday Movie: Ministry streams films, invites people to watch

The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has invited people to stream the movies chosen for the 2022 Family Sunday Movie (FSM) through the ministry’s official YouTube channel as a form of appreciation toward local filmmakers.

The ministry said it will stream two movies that have won the FSM Official Selection in March 2022: Maramba, a documentary by Riandhani Yudha Pamungkas, and Germintang, a fiction film by Irfan Akba.

In a statement issued on Monday, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said that Maramba and Gemintang will be officially nominated at FSM award night in November 2022.

The two films will enter the nomination along with other films chosen from the March to October 2022 period, he said.

Maramba will be streamed from March 2–31, 2022, and Gemintang from March 1–30, 2022, he said.

The ministry has prepared a number of rewards for the chosen films, he said.

The rewards comprise certificates, cash, Wonderful Indonesia souvenirs, and FSM kits, he informed.

The movies’ posters will also be displayed at the ministry’s building as a part of the exhibition, he said.

In addition, out of the chosen films streaming on YouTube, the film with the most number of viewers will receive an additional cash prize, Uno said.

Through FSM, the minister said he expects a platform for regional filmmakers to be created to promote short films so that they can compete and become the pride of Indonesia’s film industry.

Young regional filmmakers can also get an equal opportunity to showcase their works, gain competition experience, and hone their skills to produce better works, he added.

In addition, this will open opportunities to create jobs and revive the economy sustainably, he said.

“Continue to create, make great works, develop regional potential, and prove that we can be an agent of change for the future so that we can bolster the economy and create broader business opportunities,” the minister remarked.

FSM is a short film festival initiated by the ministry through the Music, Film, and Animation Directorate.

It is meant to be a form of appreciation toward the film industry workers, specifically indie films, and a platform for promoting chosen short films, the ministry said.

Complete information on FSM can be accessed through FSM’s social media account and website www.familysundaymovie.com, it added.

Indonesia To Welcome Int’l Travellers Quarantine-Free In Bali From Mar 14

The Indonesian government will conduct a trial on receiving international travellers without quarantine, in the country’s resort island of Bali, beginning Mar 14, under certain conditions, a senior minister said yesterday.

The trial may be launched before Mar 14, if the government sees positive development in the next one week, for the continued downward trend in the COVID-19 cases in Bali, coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, told a virtual press conference.

Foreign visitors have to show proof of hotel booking payments, for at least four days, if they want to enter Bali, while Indonesians who arrive in the holiday island from abroad, are required to show proof of domicile in the Goddess island, said Panjaitan, who is also coordinator of the public mobility restrictions (PPKM) policy, for Java and Bali.

International travellers should have been fully vaccinated, or received booster jabs, besides conducting entry PCR tests, and waiting at hotels for negative test results, he said.

“If the tests show negative results, the international travellers are allowed to do other activities under health protocols,” the Indonesian official said, adding that, they should also carry out PCR tests again, on the third day, at their hotels.

In addition, the requirement to have a guarantor sponsor for tourist e-visa requests will be revoked, because it is considered burdensome for foreign tourists, he said.

He pointed out that, Bali was chosen as the pilot project location, because the rate of two-dose vaccination in the province is higher than in other provinces. If the trial in Bali is successful, the government will expand the non-quarantine policy across Indonesia, on Apr 1, or sooner.–
