Bank Mandiri executes first ESG repo transaction in Indonesia

State-run Bank Mandiri executed a diversification program of sustainable financing instruments through wholesale funding in the framework of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) through a US$500 million-worth repo (repurchase agreement) with two counterparties.

This diversification program is part of Bank Mandiri’s commitment to supporting Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency as well as becoming the landmark transaction as the first ESG repo transaction in Indonesia and one of the first movers in Southeast Asia, Bank Mandiri’s Director of Treasury and International Banking Panji Irawan explained here on Monday.

Bank Mandiri as a repo seller is committed to distributing the received funds to fund green projects with the criteria that refer to Mandiri’s sustainable bond framework.

“This ESG repo transaction is a strategic initiative, as not only does it strengthen the company’s funding structure in support of business expansion plans but also implements a sustainable financial action plan of the sustainable banking pillar,” Irawan affirmed.

In 2021, Bank Mandiri had issued the first sustainable bond framework worth US$300 million for environmental and social-based projects.

Through three strategic pillars — Sustainable Banking, Sustainable Operations, and Sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Financial Inclusions — Bank Mandiri vows to run the practice of sustainable finance initiated by the government.

Furthermore, Irawan also explained that the ESG bonds had grown rapidly since 2015, and there was a significant increase in social bonds since the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Irawan, it is a reflection for issuers to follow up on health and other social issues during the pandemic.

The demand for ESG instruments, such as green bonds, with long-term tenor, is expected to continue to increase as more companies become aware of ESG-related issues.

“Bank Mandiri is committed to supporting the government’s program in developing a sustainable economy, participating actively in the Financial Services Authority’s (OJK’s) roadmap of sustainable finance, and striving for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Irawan pointed out.

Jokowi, dressed in a batik shirt, black trousers, and black peci cap, welcomed some of the mourners.

After attending the funeral procession, Jokowi left the location at around 11:12 p.m. local time. However, Raka stayed back until the session ended.

Some senior-level officials attending the funeral comprised Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Financial Services Authority (OJK) Board of Commissioners Chairman Wimboh Santoso, and Karanganyar District Head Juliyatmono.

Jokowi’s uncle, Suryosardjono, died at 7:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, February 27, at a funeral home on Ahmad Yani Street, Manahan Village, Banjarsari Sub-district, Surakarta City, Central Java.

Sigit, one of Suryosardjono’s sons-in-law, informed that Suryosardjono had long suffered from lung disease and had contracted COVID-19.

“He had lung disease and then got infected by COVID-19, so maybe it was long COVID,” Sigit stated.

“When Mr. President visited, he still woke up and his (swab test result) was negative,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Raka, who is concurrently mayor of Solo City, noted that Suryosardjono, who was the older brother of Jokowi’s late mother, Sudjiatmi Notomiharjo, had taught the president about the furniture business.

Jakarta prioritizing efficient, effective work in Formula E circuit

The committee of the Jakarta E-Prix or Formula E Jakarta must apply efficient and effective work for construction of the Formula E Circuit in Ancol, Pademangan, North Jakarta, Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria stated.

“The work on the Formula E foundation has complied with the provisions. Technically, at the construction site, reinforcement using bamboo is required. Hence, the use of bamboo in the Formula E circuit work had gone through technical calculations on the field,” Patria noted on Monday.

He later informed people that not all road foundations were made of concrete, and some still needed bamboo for the construction.

He noted that during the pandemic, the committee had to consider the most effective and efficient cost-spending option.

Patria noted that the Formula E committee will have ensured the decision to use bamboo as an effective and efficient material for the circuit.

“The committee had ensured the use of bamboo in the construction of the Formula E circuit. By God’s will, it will be completed in April,” Patria remarked.

Earlier, the person in charge (PIC) of the Formula E circuit construction from PT Jaya Konstruksi Manggala Pratama, Ari Wibowo, explained that the bamboo was chosen to be the framework for the surface of the track since it was water-resistant.

The contractor decided to use bamboo poles based on grounds that out of the five construction zones, zone five along one kilometer had soft soil and working on it posed challenges.

On the other hand, contractors had to expedite their work on account of the fact that the race will be held on June 4, 2022, or just 99 days away.

Wibowo remarked that some 40 percent of the construction was in zone five.

“Hence, zone five is the most difficult and requires the most amount of energy and concentration,” he added.

Since early February, the contractor had completed mapping and cleaning the area and forming the road body to ensure that the shape, height, and bends of the circuit are in accordance with the design.

Furthermore, Wibowo said his side had begun the process of compacting the road and working on the bottom foundation. During that process, stone and rocks are required to be compacted with a tandem roller.

Wibowo noted that the contractor was working hard to build the Formula E circuit. Currently, the work on the Formula E circuit was around 30-percent complete, he noted.

West Sumatra: BMKG runs soil susceptibility survey after quake

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has conducted a survey on soil susceptibility to earthquake shocks by mapping the level of damage to buildings.

The survey was carried out after the 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit West Pasaman, West Sumatra on Friday (February 25, 2021), BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said here on Monday.

The survey mapped out and measured different types of soil and rocks around the quake’s epicenter, she informed.

BMKG is also continuing to monitor and determine the possibility of aftershocks and estimate when they will end, she said.

Based on the survey’s results, the local government has been advised to pay strict attention to the building code for earthquake-resistant building standards, especially in zones that are prone to earthquake shocks, she added.

Moreover, the measurements made during the survey will be mapped out factually to identify the zones that would be susceptible to strong shocks in the future, she informed.

“It will be verified. Which zones have the high, medium, or low level of vulnerability, as information for local governments in rebuilding the region,” Karnawati said.

She also advised the earthquake victims to return to their homes if they were still in a habitable condition. This includes homes outside the 200-meter radius of the riverbank, considering that aftershocks have started to weaken, she added.

“Do not believe hoaxes or fake news that are deliberately spread to scare the public. Make sure the information is valid from BMKG. Please check the BMKG’s communication channels, not only updates about the earthquake but also weather conditions and early warnings,” Karnawati emphasized.

The field survey was conducted by Karnawati, Technical Seismological Center head Rahmat Triyono, BMKG Territory 1 Center head Darmawan, and BMKG’s provincial coordinator and five head stations from the West Sumatra region, she said.

BMKG also coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the West Pasaman administration, and the local River Basin Agency (BWS) team for the survey, she added.
