KONI proposes holding Youth PON again

General chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Marciano Norman has proposed that the Youth National Sports Week (PON) be held one more time to prepare athletes for international competitions.

He made the proposal during the national working meeting of KONI here on Wednesday.

He deemed Youth PON as quite important to prepare Indonesian athletes who will participate in the Youth Olympic Games and Asian Youth Games.

“Of course, this should be done through a close discussion and strong support from the Youth and Sports Ministry so that we could hold Youth PON once more as a preparation for the Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games,” he added.

The Youth and Sports Ministry had decided not to hold Youth PON in 2017 because there was already a similar championship for youth athletes, namely the National Student Sports Week (Popnas), he noted.

The decision was also made by the ministry for the sake of budget efficiency, he said.

Norman then proposed several other championships that could be held in Indonesia that could serve as a good training platform for athletes who will participate in international competitions.

To prepare athletes for the Asian and World Beach Games, he suggested holding a national water sports championship titled Indonesia Beach Games.

In addition, he also suggested Indonesia Mix Martial Art Games be held to prepare athletes for the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

“We are also proposing a national martial art sports week with taekwondo and pencak silat fighting under one national event which will produce national champions,” he said.

He also suggested a national indoor sports week.

The meeting is being held from December 8–10, 2021 in Jakarta. Representatives from 34 provincial KONI and leaders of 72 sports branches, members of KONI are taking part in the meeting.

Mayor expresses concern over rapes committed by teacher in Bandung

Bandung Mayor Oded M. Danial expressed concern over acts of rape committed by a teacher on 12 female students in Bandung, West Java.

Danial condemned the actions of the teacher, identified by his initials as HW, 36. The mayor expects a fair decision to be reached through the judicial process.

“I was shocked to hear the news. Hopefully, the judges would give a verdict that offers a sense of justice to the rape victims and their families,” the mayor noted in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday.

Danial opined that a teacher must be a role model for his students.

The perpetrator, HW, is sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Prosecutor’s Office affirmed that HW had committed such acts from 2016 to early 2021.

Acting assistant for general crimes at the West Java Prosecutor’s Office, Riyono, stated that HW was then a defendant, as he had undergone a trial process. The defendant was charged under Article 81 of the Child Protection Law.

“The sentence is (supposedly) 15 years, but there is more to it, given that the perpetrator is an educator. (Hence), the sentence (becomes) 20 years,” Riyono emphasized.

Head of the legal information section at West Java’s High Prosecutor’s Office, Dodi Gazali, remarked that the teacher committed the criminal acts at various places. HW is suspected of using coercion along with threats of violence and allegedly luring the victims with gifts.

Ministry encouraging complete switch to face-to-face learning

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has encouraged all parties to accelerate the implementation of 100 percent face-to-face learning, an official from the ministry has said.

“We encourage various parties to accelerate the implementation of face-to-face learning, not limited but fully,” the ministry’s Director General of Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education, Jumeri, said at an online press conference on Thursday.

According to him, the implementation of full face-to-face learning is necessary to prevent a decline in children’s learning outcomes, which the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic could cause.

The pandemic could also lead to children dropping out of school, entering into an early marriage, suffering domestic violence, or it could even reduce their competitiveness, he added.

Currently, many children have dropped out of school, the number of students in early childhood education schools (PAUD) has also decreased amid the pandemic, he said.

The pandemic can also cause boredom among children, he added and called for efforts to overcome the situation.

He suggested that children be encouraged to exercise in a bid to maintain and improve their physical and mental health.

“Amid the pandemic, we must pay more attention to children’s health, both physically and mentally. One of the activities that we can do to overcome this boredom problem is exercise, which can positively impact children’s physical and mental health,” he remarked.

In addition, children also need adequate nutritional intake, he said. There are several nutritious foods that children can consume, such as vegetables, meat, egg, and fish, he added.

He also reminded that people must comply with the health protocols that include wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining social distance, reducing mobility, and avoiding crowds amid the pandemic.

West Java governor denounces child rape case in boarding school

West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil has condemned the child rape case in an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Cibiru, Bandung City, West Java, and expressed hope that the rapist would be meted out severe punishment.

In the rape case involving the owner of the pesantren, HW, and several victims, who were students of the boarding school, the acts occurred from 2016 to 2021, and some of the victims had gotten pregnant.

HW is currently undergoing legal proceedings in court, and his school has been shut down.

“Hopefully, the court would be able to punish this savage and immoral perpetrator by slapping as many articles as possible on him,” Kamil noted in his official statement, Thursday.

The governor urged law enforcement officials to hand out severe punishment to the perpetrator.

The governor ensured that the Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning (DP3AKB) Office of West Java Province is providing assistance to all the victims.

“Female students, who fell victims, have been and are being taken care of by the West Java provincial DP3AKB team for trauma healing, and currently, we are preparing a new education pattern according to their rights to grow and develop,” the governor explained.

He called on all educational institutions and pesantren forums to give special attention to the sexual violence case.

He also called on village officials to always monitor all public activities in their respective area.

“Parents are urged to always monitor their children’s educational situation in boarding schools, so they could get up-to-date information of their children’s activities,” he noted.

Gov’t to disburse additional Internet quota aid in Dec

The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry is ready to disburse additional Internet quota assistance to teachers and students in December 2021 to support the combined face-to-face and long-distance learning.

Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim made the remarks in a written statement issued here on Thursday.

The provision of the assistance is also due to the enforcement of community activity restrictions (PPKM) regulated by the Instruction of Home Affairs Minister, which has limited face-to-face learning with strict health protocols, he said.

The quota will be distributed in stages from December 11 to December 15, 2021, and will be valid for 30 days once received, he added.

Furthermore, early childhood education students will get three gigabytes, while elementary and secondary education students will receive a quota of four gigabytes per month, he informed.

“In addition, for teachers, college students, and lecturers, they will get five gigabytes,” he said.

However, the unused quota will not be carried forward to the next month, he added.

“Please use it optimally to access learning materials on the ‘Rumah Belajar’ (means House of Learning) website or other educational channels,” he said.

The assistance distribution is regulated in the ministry’s Secretary General Regulation Number 4/2021 on Technical Guidelines for Distribution of Government Assistance of Internet Quota in 2021.

Head of the Center for Data and Information Technology, M. Hasan Chabibie, informed that the mobile numbers updated and accounted for in November 2021 will also automatically receive the assistance in December 2021.

The quota can be used to access all websites and apps except those which are blocked by the Communication and Information Ministry and listed on the website of the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry (http://kuota-learning. kemdikbud.go.id), he added.

Minister supports PBSI’s decision to withdraw from BWF Championships

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali assured his support and understanding of the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI’s) justification to withdraw from the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain, planned on December 12-19, 2021.

“I have been informed that the pandemic factor is behind their decision to withdraw from the competition, and we assure our support to any decisions made by the national badminton federation,” Amali stated at a press conference during the Grand Design of National Sports dissemination event in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday.

As badminton is the mainstay sport of Indonesia in international sporting events since a long time, the minister expressed confidence that the racket sport will remain as such despite the national team’s withdrawal from the competition.

Amali also noted that despite not mentioning badminton as the main national sport while introducing the grand design earlier, no other implication was intended on the negligence.

“I did not mention badminton not because they are withdrawing from the competition, but merely since the presentation slide that I read while I am speaking does not include badminton besides weightlifting, archery, and wall climbing sports that also become our mainstay in international competitions,” Amali noted.

Earlier, PBSI officially declared its decision to withdraw Indonesia’s national badminton team from the BWF World Championships scheduled to take place next week.

The sports organization cited security and safety concerns of the national team amid the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 as the reason behind withdrawal from the championship, with PBSI chairperson Agung Firman Sampurna sanctioning the decision.

Inputs from team officials, coaches, and the organization’s training and performance division head Rionny Mainaky were taken into account before the organization finalized its decision to withdraw from the games.

“We did not want to risk our athletes’ safety and security. We also consulted athletes regarding this decision, and they have expressed their agreement to the withdrawal,” Mainaky stated.

Minister expects more village-centric Indonesian movies in future

Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Minister Abdul Halim Iskandar, in a written statement here, Thursday, expects more village-centric movies to be created in future to bolster the people’s fondness for villages in Indonesia.

The minister then lauded the film titled “Kembali ke Desa” (Back to Villages) produced by Paramitha Devi Dimensi.

The film is expected to raise the public’s attention and awareness regarding the importance of villages for Indonesia’s future.

“I highly laud the film on Indonesian villages, including Kembali ke Desa,” the minister remarked after attending the film’s premiere on Wednesday.

Iskandar opined that villages were an important entity for Indonesia. Since the disbursal of village funds, wide-ranging development had occurred nationwide.

“Villages are not just marginal places or a picture of misery and suffering. Villages are now involved in various forms of innovation, creation, and economic activities,” he affirmed.

In the past, villages in Indonesia were often viewed as a reflection of the country’s backwardness. Jobs were difficult to find, health service facilities were limited, and education facilities did not exist.

This prompted the migration of villagers to cities for urbanization.

“However, with the village fund, this image has started to erode. There are also village chiefs with a doctoral degree. This means village development is prospective for accelerating development in Indonesia,” Iskandar remarked.

Currently, his ministry has developed a guideline for village development policies in the form of the Village Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with 18 goals and 222 indicators.

The 18th goal is Dynamic Village Institution and Adaptive Village Culture, which means village development should not be separate from local culture.

“This is a job for us all. Do not let villages be developed without cultural roots as its foundation,” the minister stressed.

Executive Producer of “Kembali ke Desa” Paramitha Rusady noted that the film carries a moral message that encourages millennials to not be hesitant to live in their respective villages and develop them.

PLN opens first electric vehicle charging station in Labuan Bajo

State-owned electricity provider PT PLN (Persero) is expanding the operations of electric vehicle charging station (SPKLU) by establishing the first SPKLU in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.

The facility is located at the Kampung Ujung Tourism Parking Lot, Labuan Bajo Village, West Manggarai District, NTT Province, and aims to expedite the establishment of an electric vehicle ecosystem.

“The SPKLU is able to encourage the realization of an electrifying lifestyle among the community and support the provision of electric vehicles by entrepreneurs,” Director of Commerce and Customer Management of PLN Bob Saril noted in a written statement here on Thursday.

In addition, he expected the facility to be able to push the massive use of battery-based electric vehicles in NTT Province, especially at the village level.

Applying the self-service concept, customers can charge their own electric vehicles according to the instructions.

The facility can charge quickly with 50 kilo-watt (kW) of direct current and 22 kW of alternating current. Thus, each vehicle can be fully charged in two hours at the most depending on the battery capacity.

Using electric vehicles is more efficient than conventional models, as the consumption of one liter of fuel is equivalent to 1.3 kilo-watt hour (kWh) of electricity.

One liter of fuel used to cover about 10-12 kilometers (km) costs around Rp8,000, meanwhile one kilo-watt hour of electricity only costs around Rp1,400.

“Thus, using an electric vehicle to cover a distance of 10-12 km only costs Rp1,820,” the director pointed out.

The SPKLU has also been integrated with the Charge.IN app that can make it easier for electric car owners to control and monitor the charging process.

“We will continue to build more SPKLU in several regions in NTT Province, such as in Kupang City, Ende City, Maumere City, and Waingapu City, to accelerate the use of electric cars,” Saril added.
