Helping hands behind Papua PON

It is Tevina Leberina Ayomi’s first day as a liaison officer for guest referees at the 20th PON National Games, specifically those who have come for the rowing event in Youtefa Bay, Jayapura, and she is expertly tackling grievances.

One guest has complained about the lateness of the food. “When will the food come? It’s past lunchtime!” he yells over the intercom.

The 23-year-old smiles patiently and replies, “Just a moment, sir. A little bit more. I have confirmed with the caterer, the food is on the way.”

“But when?” the guest persists.

In response, Ayomi rushes to the referee’s secretariat room to directly apologize for the delay.

“Even though the delay was in the delivery, I was still feeling guilty because I could not show my best work to them,” Ayomi told ANTARA.

Ayomi may not be an important or decision-making official, who usually gets all the spotlight. She is just one of the thousands of volunteers helping keep the XX Papua PON run smoothly.

However, apart from their small role, people like Ayomi have a big hand in the successful running of the multi-sports event. When the contingents go back to their lodging or the spectators head back to their homes, Ayomi and other volunteers finish up all the work at the venue.

They are also the ones who are at the forefront of dealing and serving athletes, guests, and spectators at the four-yearly national sports event.

The volunteers have been prepared by the PON Grand Committee to ensure the convenience of delegates, athletes, and other participants by providing information or assistance in other necessary tasks. Some have also been prepared to ensure the cleanliness of each arena.

At least 25 thousand volunteers are involved in Papua’s ongoing games. Some are serving as liaison officers, volunteers, or workforce for the event.

They have been recruited after fulfilling all the requirements for PON volunteers, which include furnishing electronic identity cards (e-KTP), a taxpayer’s corporate number (NPWP), a vaccine certificate, and a 3×4 cm photo.

Education Ministry to offer scholarships to talented athletes

Through the direction of President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) with the National Sports Grand Design, talent management in sports is becoming increasingly organized and well-managed.

Jakarta The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has informed that it is currently selecting students excelling at PON XX in Papua to offer them Talent Achievement scholarships.

“It is being coordinated with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and also universities for them to be considered for outstanding talent scholarships,” acting head of the ministry’s of Bureau of Cooperation and Public Relations Anang Ristanto informed here on Saturday.

The scholarship award is meant as an appreciation of students who excel in the national championship, Ristanto said.

Meanwhile, acting head of the ministry’s National Achievement Center Asep Sukmayadi said the ministry is carrying out selections of students at the high school, vocational, and college levels.

“Later, the consideration will be based on their achievements whether it is the national or international level and what medals they won, like gold, silver or bronze, to be awarded the talent achievement scholarships,” Sukmayadi informed.

The Talent Achievement Scholarship is part of the ministry’s Merdeka Belajar program (Freedom in Learning) Episode 10 policies, he said.

Scholarships will be awarded at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he added.

The scholarship award is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Finance Ministry’s Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), he said.

It is also a part of the National Sports Grand Design, in which each ministry and institution has its own role, Sukmayadi explained.

“This is a good example of how sustainable talent coaching starts from the national sports competition. Through the direction of President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) with the National Sports Grand Design, talent management in sports is becoming increasingly organized and well-managed,” he remarked.

According to the ministry’s secretary general, Suharti, the ministry is honoring excellent students not only in the academic field but also in non-academic fields.

Meanwhile, UNJ (Jakarta State University) Rector Prof. Komarudin said his team has a policy of awarding scholarships to medalists of PON, the National Student Sports Week, SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics.

UNJ already has a policy for awarding scholarships, especially at the undergraduate level (S1) for medalists, he explained.

The scholarship will be awarded to UNJ students, he informed. For example, PON and Olympics weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan has been awarded the scholarship, he said.

East Luwu: Ministry prepares to reinvestigate 2019 rape case

Makassar, Sulawesi The Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry has dispatched a four-member investigative team to gather facts regarding the alleged rape of three children by their father in East Luwu District, South Sulawesi Province, in 2019.

Investigations into the case were stopped by local police at the time due to insufficient evidence.

While four investigators have been dispatched currently, a team coordinator will follow soon, an official said.

“We are still gathering facts, so we came down here to find the facts,” the ministry’s team leader Taufan said in Makassar on Saturday.

However, he was reluctant to share the results of a meeting with the South Sulawesi Women and Child Protection Technical Unit pertaining to the case’s handling.

“We cannot provide information yet because this is only the initial process. We are repeating this process from the beginning to see the facts on the field. We are still here until the process is complete,” he elaborated.

He said that the team from the ministry has come to seek the truth and gather facts so that the case can be reopened, given that the incident involved children who were allegedly sexually abused by their own father, identified by his initials as SA (initial).

“We are looking for facts here. What is clear is that we collect facts from all relevant parties. If all (locations) are revealed (to the public), those will be visited, they will get ready. We want to give an element of surprise so that they do not prepare (tamper with evidence),” Taufan added.
