DPR Speaker urges Papua traditional leaders to push vaccinations

Jakarta Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has urged Papuan traditional leaders to help the government encourage residents to get vaccinated to expedite the achievement of herd immunity.

Efforts to reach the vaccination target in Papua will need the cooperation of many parties, including traditional leaders and religious leaders, who have an impact on the community, she opined.

“Traditional leaders and religious leaders have an important role in convincing the Papuan people of the importance of vaccination,” she said in a written statement received here on Saturday.

Virus transmission can be handled if every region, including Papua, ensures that most of its residents have received the COVID-19 vaccination, she added.

Maharani gave instructions on the acceleration of vaccinations while meeting the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) of Papua province at the Papua Governor’s Office in Jayapura on Saturday.

Batik a symbol of Indonesia’s soft power diplomacy: Marsudi

Jakarta Batik is a symbol of Indonesia’s soft power diplomacy that has become more resilient and recognized by the world, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi has said.

It is for this reason that the Foreign Affairs Ministry will continue to present batik as Indonesia’s identity every chance it gets on the international stage, she remarked at the 2021 National Batik Day event, organized virtually on Saturday.

“Today marks more than a decade of Indonesia’s diplomacy journey with batik that has been recognized by the world, not just as the nation’s cultural inheritance, but also as non-object cultural inheritance ever since its acknowledgement by UNESCO on October 2, 2009,” she noted.

“This shows the world’s recognition of the richness of Indonesia’s culture and the nation’s commitment to protect batik,” she added.

Meet Fahriansyah, South Kalimantan’s wrestling ace

Wrestling remains the strength of the South Kalimantan contingent to bag gold medals at the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in 2021 in Papua.

Fahriansyah, 33, is one of South Kalimantan’s aces in wrestling at the 20th National Sports Week (PON) being held in Papua. He is one of the nine wrestlers sent by the South Kalimantan contingent to compete at this year’s PON and defend the contingent’s history of winning gold medals for wrestling at the national games.

Born in Rantau, Tapin District, South Kalimantan, on November 26, 1987, he will again compete in the men’s freestyle wrestling in the 86-kg category. He qualified for the PON event in Papua this year after winning a gold medal in the pre-PON event.

Fahriansyah does have a long history of representing South Kalimantan in PON. During his PON debut in the 17th East Kalimantan PON in 2008, he brought home a gold medal in the 74-kg category. Subsequently, at the 18th Riau PON in 2012, he again defeated his opponent and maintained his gold medal position.

However, during the 2016 West Java PON, he failed to win a gold in the men’s wrestling 86-kg category and won the bronze medal instead. The injury he suffered made him lose to an opponent, whom he actually won against during the pre-PON event, whereas in the 2015 pre-PON, he won a gold medal.
