Papua PON will run in orderly, secure manner: police chief

National Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo visited several venues for Papua’s PON National Games on Thursday and assured that the multi-sport event will run in an orderly and secure manner.

Among the sporting venues he reviewed ahead of the official opening ceremony of the country’s biggest multi-sport event on October 2, 2021 were a tennis court as well as soccer and diving facilities.

During his visit, General Prabowo also inspected the PeduliLindungi surveillance application at the sporting venues, which has been installed as part of the government’s COVID-19 prevention and mitigation efforts.

He reviewed the details of security and implementation of COVID-19 health protocols at the Papua games arenas that he visited, according to a press statement from the National Police that ANTARA received here on Thursday.

Prabowo appealed to the organizing committee of the 20th PON National Games to keep campaigning the importance of complying with the health protocols through loudspeakers.

Papua has come under the spotlight of Indonesia’s media outlets as it is due to host this year’s PON National Games and National Para Games (Peparnas).

The PON will be held in Jayapura city and the districts of Jayapura, Mimika, and Merauke from October 2 to October 15, while Peparnas will be held from November 2 to November 15.

At least 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia are expected to participate in Papua’s PON National Games, which will feature 37 events.

Meanwhile, 1,935 athletes and 740 officials will take part in the National Para Games in Jayapura city and Jayapura district, which will feature 12 events.

Regarding Papua’s security condition, Papua Police chief Inspector-General Mathius Fakhiri had said earlier that security disturbances by Papuan separatist terrorists would not disrupt the hosting of the Papua games.

In a statement issued on September 14, 2021, Fakhiri appealed to participating athletes and officials to not worry as around eight thousand security personnel will secure the multi-sport event.

“The security situation in four regions that will co-host the PON National Games are far away from areas frequently disrupted by the armed Papuan separatist terrorists,” he said.

Funding not main challenge to addressing extreme poverty, says Amin

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has said that funding is not the primary challenge faced by the government in tackling extreme poverty in seven priority provinces, including East Java.

“I think funding is not the main issue in addressing extreme poverty,” he stated in Surabaya on Thursday.

The biggest challenge for both the regional and central governments is ensuring that the beneficiaries of programs targeting the poor receive the assistance meant for them, Amin said.

“Our biggest challenge is ensuring that all programs from the central government, provincial governments, and district governments can be accepted by extremely poor households in their regions,” he explained.

The government only has until the end of 2021 to resolve extreme poverty in some regions, he highlighted.

He then urged East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and the heads of five prioritized East Java districts to work hard towards realizing social assistance and empowerment programs for the extremely poor.

The five districts are Probolinggo, Bojonegoro, Lamongan, Bangkalan, and Sumenep.

“The next challenge is that we have three months left in 2021. It is very difficult to solve extreme poverty with regular programs,” the Vice President remarked.

East Java is one of the seven provinces that have been included in the government’s list of regions prioritized for extreme poverty eradication efforts. The government is targeting to bring down the extreme poverty rate in the provinces to zero percent by the end of 2021.

There are a total of 508,571 extremely poor people in the five prioritized districts of East Java, and a total of 265,180 extremely poor households, Amin noted.

Earlier, in Bandung, West Java on Tuesday (September 29, 2021), he had said that the program was part of efforts to restore the national economy, which has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ministers review readiness for PON opening ceremony

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, and Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, on Thursday reviewed readiness for the XX PON opening ceremony in Papua.

“We have done a final check on the readiness of the committee, and everything went well,” Mahfud said, as quoted on the official website of InfoPublik here on Thursday.

In his remark, he said the committee’s readiness for the PON opening ceremony had reached 100 percent.

According to him, the security for the opening of the PON has been prepared well. The public and invitees who will attend the opening ceremony will undergo a security inspection, he added.

Chairman of the daily affairs of the PON XX Organizing Committee Papua, Yunus Wonda, said that performances during the PON opening at the Lukas Enembe Stadium will mainly involve local residents of Papua.

“All dancers (who will perform at the opening ceremony) are Papua’s local talents,” he informed.

Wonda appealed to those planning to attend the PON opening ceremony to comply with the health protocols, including all the requirements set by the committee.

“Health protocols are important; anyone who enters (the stadium) must have been vaccinated twice,” he said.

The opening ceremony of the PON XX National Games is scheduled to take place on October 2, 2021, at the Lukas Enembe Stadium in Jayapura. The national games will be opened by President Joko Widodo.

Earlier, secretary general of the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI), Ade Lukman, revealed that the opening ceremony on Saturday night will showcase the natural beauty of Papua.

The XX PON 2021 will be held on October 2-15, 2021. At least 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia are expected to participate in the event, which will feature 37 sports.

Women’s rock climbing team secures first PON gold for NTB

The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) contingent for the PON XX National Games bagged its first gold medal after the women’s boulder team emerged victorious in the rock climbing sport.

“We are optimistic that our first gold medal would bolster our athletes to exert more efforts to surpass our target of 17 gold medals for the PON Games,” NTB contingent Chef de Mission Mori Hanafi stated while lauding the women’s boulder rock climbing team’s victory in Mataram, Thursday.

The NTB women’s rock climbing team comprised Nurul Iqamah, Anggun Yolanda, Ayu Fatullah, and Ade Irma Suryani, with Ari Purnomo serving as the team’s coach, according to Hanafi.

“We laud the victory of the women’s rock climbing team and laud all officials, who supported our team to their victory,” Hanafi affirmed.

The NTB women’s rock climbing team defeated its counterparts from East Java, West Java, Jakarta, East Kalimantan, and Riau in the women’s boulder rock climbing final match in Mimika, Thursday.

The chef de mission admitted that the victory of the women’s team was unexpected, as the team’s initial target was only to win the bronze medal, yet their performance in the final match helped them secure the gold medal.

“The women’s boulder rock climbing team is not our priority, as they were initially targeted to win the bronze medal, but they instead surpassed the target and won the gold medal. We hope this would be a good omen for the NTB contingent,” Hanafi stated.

Hanafi informed that the contingent will compete in the women’s team lead climbing and men’s team boulder rock climbing’s qualification matches on Friday (Oct 1).

“The athletes representing the province in the women’s lead climbing are Nurul Iqamah, Anggun Yolanda, and Ayu Fatullah, while the men’s boulder climbing will be represented by Azhar Wan Akbar, Joni Kasria, Fauzan Nurul Islam, and Zulius Mustofa Aji,” the chef de mission noted.

Ensuring an orderly, secure and protected Papua games

Ahead of the opening ceremony of Papua’s 20th PON National Games on Saturday, 2nd October, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo conducted his final inspection by visiting several sporting venues in Jayapura City. During his working visit, along with Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali, on Thursday, General Prabowo ensured the multi-sport event would run in an orderly, secure and protected manner.

For the opening ceremony, the organizing committee prepared two spectacular firework displays at the Lukas Enembe Stadium and the Youtefa Bridge.

Despite the fact the event’s opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, 2nd October, many participating athletes have already competed in several events.

As a result, several provinces have won medals. As of Thursday at 09:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), Jakarta still topped the preliminary medal table with 34 medals, with 17 golds, eight silvers and nine bronzes.

The second position was secured by Papua, with a total of 25 medals (13 golds, three silvers and nine bronzes) while the third, fourth and fifth positions were filled by West Java, East Java and Bali.

The Papua games, co-hosted by Jayapura City and the districts of Jayapura, Mimika, and Merauke from 2nd to 15th October, is witnessing the participation of some 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia.

The athletes are competing in 37 events, including Pencak Silat (Indonesia’s traditional martial arts), Wushu (China’s traditional martial arts), soccer, athletics, swimming, diving, badminton and archery.

The sporting venues inspected by General Prabowo ahead of the official opening ceremony were the tennis court, soccer field and diving pool.

During his visit, he reviewed the use of the PeduliLindungi surveillance application at the sporting venues, as part of the government’s COVID-19 prevention and mitigation efforts. He also reviewed the security details.

Prabowo appealed to the organizing committee of the 20th PON National Games to keep highlighting the importance of complying with health protocols through loudspeakers.

Home Minister Tito Karnavian earlier asked all athletes, officials, organizing committee members and spectators to comply with strict COVID-19 health protocols during the start of the event.

Karnavian’s Ministerial Instruction No.46/2021 was announced by the Home Ministry’s regional administration management director-general, Safrizal, in a statement received by ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Complying with health protocols is key to making the country’s biggest multi-sports event successful, Safrizal stressed.

According to the ministerial instruction, all participating athletes, officials, organizing committee members, spectators and locals living near sporting venues must get vaccinated.

They must all take at least the first COVID-19 shot, he said, adding the number of spectators will be restricted and a viewing gathering, locally known as “nonton bareng,” has been prohibited.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 during Papua’s 20th PON National Games, authorities must ensure that guests, as well as spectators, can show valid PCR or antigen test results.

All guests and visitors will also be required to carry bonafide vaccination certificates, Safrizal stated, adding medical facilities with healthcare workers have been set up in certain areas to serve those in need.

The Home Ministry is, therefore, working with government agencies, such as health offices, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), COVID-19 task force, and the PON National Games organizing committee, he affirmed.

As part of the implementation of the “3M” health protocols, the Home Ministry is intensifying its campaign to encourage people to wear face-masks in cities that will co-host the Games, he further said.

Regarding Papua’s security condition, Papua Police Chief Inspector-General Mathius Fakhiri earlier said armed Papuan terrorists’ security disturbances would not disrupt the Games.

Therefore, as announced in a statement he made on 14th September, 2021, Fakhiri appealed to participating athletes and officials to not worry, as some 8,000 security personnel would secure the event.

The security situations in four regions co-hosting the PON National Games remain stable, as they are far away from areas frequently disrupted by the armed Papuan separatist terrorists, he added.

As well as the Papua police’s security guarantee, the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI)-Jakarta office has adopted preventive measures by assigning 20 police officers in Jakarta’s contingent.

The involvement of police officers from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police in the contingent aims to protect and secure officials, coaches and 735 athletes competing in Papua.

The KONI-Jakarta Office has also for the assistance of navy personnel at the Indonesian Naval Base (Lantamal) I, XI, and Mimika to protect the contingent, according to KONI-Jakarta Office Head Djamhuron Wibowo.

The office set a target of winning the Papua Games with 171 gold medals, he added.

Papua’s 20th PON National Games, which can finally be held after being delayed for one year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, is a milestone in Indonesia’s history.

Purnama’s confidence running high for Papua PON 2021

Ken Ayuthaya Purnama is among the Jakarta contingent’s top contenders for the women’s 100-meter hurdles and women’s 4×100-meter relay at the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON).

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Purnama will compete with two other athletes from the capital, Emilia Nova and Liza Putri Ramandha.

Born on January 27, 1997, Purnama is not new to the athletics world. She has a long track record of participating in national and international championships and has made a number of achievements.

In 2013, Purnama won a bronze in the 100-meter women’s hurdles at the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China, with a time of 14.45 seconds.

That time, she finished behind Nana Fujimori from Japan, who won the gold medal with a time of 13.69 seconds, and Nguyen Thi Lan of Vietnam, who took the silver medal with a time of 14.43 seconds.

With a record time of 14.45 seconds, Purnama was the national youth record holder in Indonesia, at least until 2017.

At the international level, she won gold at the Hong Kong Intercity Athletics Championships in 2016. Then in 2018, she secured a bronze at the Asian University Games in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.

At the national level, the 24-year-old has numerous achievements under her belt. For example, in 2019, she won gold at the East Java Open with a record time of 14.30 seconds. That achievement also made her qualify for the Papua PON.

In the same year, Purnama also secured first place with 14.40 seconds at the Athletics National Championship, which took place in Cibinong, West Java.

She also bagged another gold at the National Student Sports Week in 2019 with a record time of 14.42 seconds.

With those achievements, Purnama said she is confident that she will do well in the Papua PON.

Pandemic challenges

Purnama’s preparations for Papua PON were filled with many challenges. She said that many policies imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic affected her training routines.

However, those challenges did not stop her and the Jakarta team from preparing their best for the national games, she added.

She said that thanks to preparation and hard work, she managed to achieve a record time of 14.25 seconds, her personal best, during trials with the West Java contingent some time ago.

In addition to practicing, maintaining motivation in the midst of a pandemic was essential for her, Purnama added. More so because, throughout 2020, she did not participate in competitions at all.

She said one of the ways she remained motivated was by watching athletes compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“They worked hard and did not see their family for several months to focus on training. Therefore, they also achieved the best results at the Tokyo Olympics. Such stories are very inspiring to me,” she told ANTARA during an interview on September 16, 2021.

To prepare for the Papua PON, Purnama has had to do the same thing. She had to take part in the training camp to focus on training and, of course, maintain her health in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She had to live away from her family and close friends for a while since following the health protocols during the coronavirus pandemic was crucial for participating in the Papua PON, she informed.

“These all should be done. We must take care of each other for the sake of everyone’s safety. This week, we had the opportunity to say goodbye to our family before leaving for Papua, of course, while still complying with the health protocols,” she said.

Currently, Purnama is in her final preparation period before leaving for Papua, which is scheduled to start on October 2, 2021. She said she is optimistic that she will do her best at Papua PON.

“In the last three weeks, we have been focusing on improving our performance. So, we are really focused on training,” she said.

Purnama’s second PON

For Purnama, this year’s PON in Papua will be her second PON after her debut in West Java’s national games in 2016.

In her PON debut, she finished 5th in the women’s 100-meters hurdles with a time of 14.44 seconds.

Purnama — who was 19 years old at that time — was behind her two teammates from Jakarta, Emilia Nova, who bagged gold with a time of 13.35 seconds, and Dedeh Erawati, who took silver after recording a time of 13.56 seconds.

Meanwhile, the bronze was won by Rohani of the West Nusa Tenggara contingent, who finished with 14.14 seconds and Rohimayati of Bangka Belitung secured fourth place with 14.42 seconds.

Despite her experience, Purnama has continued to train hard to improve her personal record. Based on data two years ago, she said that her position was in the top two at the national level, after Emilia Nova.

However, she said the absence of competitions during the past one year has made it difficult to predict the outcomes of the Papua PON.

“I am optimistic that I can give my best. My record for the last two years have become my motivation to keep working hard. Of course, all athletes also want to become champions. So am I. It is just a matter of our mental condition when competing later,” she remarked.

Besides bringing home gold medals for the Jakarta contingent, Purnama said she is aiming to get back into the Indonesian national team squad.

“I used to train at the national training center (Pelatnas). Apart from achieving the best results in PON Papua, of course, all athletes want to join the national training center, and that is also my goal,” she added.

The XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) 2021 will be held from October 2-15, 2021. At least 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia are expected to participate in the National Games that will feature 37 events.

Human resources, digitization are keys to revive tourism: Minister

Human resources and digitization are the keys to reviving the tourism and creative economy sectors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno.

“This pandemic has compelled us all to adapt to digital transformation, pushing us to continue upscaling, upskilling, and rescaling, right from the workforce to the marketing of tourism and creative economy products being purchased and sold through social media, e-commerce platforms, and digital wallets,” Uno noted during a virtual discussion on Thursday.

The minister opined that the notion aligned with the measures to restore the creative economy and Indonesia’s tourism, so that it would remain sustainable.

“We focus on human resources, starting from those for reskilling and upskilling to competency certification, as well as mentoring and entrepreneurship of human resources for the creative economy,” the minister elaborated.

The next step is the revitalization of tourism destinations and creative economy infrastructure that encompasses strengthening the management and governance of destinations, developing tourist villages, as well as developing or revitalizing eco-friendly destinations and/or facilities.

Boosting business resilience and competitiveness that entails the provision of incentives and access to capital, business standardization and CHSE certification, and business reactivation are also crucial.

The fourth step is the recovery and expansion of the market, which includes garnering interest of Indonesian tourists through the #DiIndonesiaAja and #inDOnesiaCARE movements; marketing creative economy products through the National Movement of Proudly Made in Indonesia, #BeliKreatifLokal, and #AdaDiWarung; and preparations for the gradual opening of borders for foreign tourists.

“The last is product and service innovation that includes quality tourism products, facilitating product and service development, protecting intellectual property rights and digital transformation, and lauding Indonesian creations,” he elaborated.

According to Minister Sandiaga, technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), had significantly influenced the way of life and interactions in addition to improving experience and convenience to support contactless and seamless tourism.

“AI can also help the creative economy sector in marketing and monetizing intellectual property,” he stated.

“We also use big data to enable all tourism activities to be recorded digitally for the purposes of ecosystem development, both digitally and through regulations presented by the government,” he affirmed.

KPU pushes for applying technology during 2024 election

The government should utilize technological developments in every election stage as stipulated in the revision of the General Election Law to accommodate SIREKAP in the 2024 Election, according to the General Elections Commission (KPU).

SIREKAP, or Recapitulation Information System, is a vote-counting system for publication of results during elections.

“We will propose the use of technology in the revision to the Election Law, so that it offers a strong legal protection during the 2024 elections,” KPU member, Evi Novida Ginting, stated during a virtual seminar here on Thursday.

According to Ginting, each stage of the general elections will utilize information technology, especially in using SIREKAP to facilitate the process of recapitulation of votes.

She expressed belief that SIREKAP would help and lower the burden of the Balloting committee group (KPPS) in the collection and recapitulation of election votes. Moreover, she noted that Indonesia will hold simultaneous elections in 2024.

“I am optimistic that the use of technology would be supported through regulations and be accommodated in the law,” she stated.

Hence, she urged the government and the parliament to utilize technology in supporting the balloting process.

The urgency of using technology during elections, especially during pandemic situations, aims to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

The use of technology can avoid crowding and expedite various steps of the general and regional elections, Ginting remarked.

In addition, she noted that the use of technology can aid in holding elections that are more open to voters and help to prevent incidents of cheating.

Ginting remarked that election voters will be ensured a fast and fair process with legal certainty.

“The pandemic has compelled all activities to adapt to the new normal, including the general and regional elections,” she noted.

Earlier, the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission II member, Guspardi Gaus, had called to recalculate the 2024 election budget worth Rp86.2 trillion proposed by the KPU to prioritize efficiency.

“The KPU should be creative and innovative in planning the budget for the 2024 elections,” Gaus remarked.
