Jakarta postpones classroom learning policy for 1,509 schools

The Jakarta Education Office postponed classroom learning for at least 1,509 schools for an entire week since Monday owing to a national computer-based assessment by the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry.

Head of the Public Relations Sub-Division of the Jakarta Education Office Taga Radja Gah stated that the delay was due to the assessment, scheduled from September 27 to September 30, 2021, so that the face-to-face learning was halted for all schools.

“The national computer-based assessment also brought student representatives to the school for assessment in the computer lab, so it was feared that there would be crowds at schools due to which the implementation of limited face-to-face learning was postponed until October 1, 2021,” Gah stated in Jakarta on Monday.

Gah remarked that although the national computer-based assessment was conducted only for the high school level, the Education Office decided that the postponement policy would apply to kindergarten up to junior high schools as well.

“This is since despite the national computer-based assessment being for the high school level, the limited face-to-face learning policy covered early childhood education, elementary, junior high, high school, and vocational school. We are concerned that there will be crowding (that extends to the entire) school,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Head of the Jakarta Education Office Nahdiana remarked that the limited face-to-face learning policy would not be implemented this Monday since some 899 additional schools that would apply the policy were still in the assessment stage.

Nahdiana remarked that the assessment aimed to review if the health protocols implemented in schools were appropriate to conduct limited face-to-face learning.

“Hence, now, we are preparing them, so that they are ready and considered qualified to open schools with limited face-to-face learning,” Nahdiana noted.

Should the hundreds of schools clear the verification, then the limited face-to-face learning phase II will be scheduled from October 4, 2021.

“It will be opened on (October) 4 yes, if I am not mistaken,” she noted.

On the other hand, in the event of a violation of health protocols in the verification process, the said school will be banned from conducting limited face-to-face learning.

The Jakarta provincial government increased the quota for limited face-to-face learning participants by 899 schools.

The decision was stipulated in the Head of the Jakarta Education Office Decree Number 984 of 2021 on the determination of educational units that conduct the second phase of limited face-to-face learning during the community activities restriction period.

Nahdiana noted in the letter that it applied to as many as 899 schools comprising 809 public schools at the kindergarten to high school and vocational school levels as well as 90 madrasas from the RA to MA levels.

These additional 899 schools increase the number of schools holding limited face-to-face learning with the hybrid method to 1,509 schools. Some 610 schools were allowed to operate.

“Implementation of the limited face-to-face learning phase II during the community activities restriction period starts on September 27 with periodic evaluations,” she added.

Brawijaya University student designs digital map for visually impaired

A student of the Faculty of Computer Science from Brawijaya University, Malang, East Java has designed a digital map application for visually impaired people called UBblindmap.

As the name implies, UBblindmap is an application based on a map of the Universitas Brawijaya (UB) area that will be released on Google Play Store and is available for download.

Muhammad Erwin Amrullah, who created UBblindmap, explained that the map application uses sounds and vibrations to serve as a communication method to help blind people, who use their sense of touch and hearing.

According to the Masters of Computer Science student at UB, this sound and vibration feature serves as information while using the application to inform blind people about data on the map’s application.

“This application is designed based on a map of the UB area and then transformed into a map with sound and vibration features, so that blind people can use it,” Amrullah expounded.

The blind map application is installed on a 10-inch tablet to later function as a recognition tool in the UB area. The application aims to help students and blind visitors present in the campus area.

He explained that the UBblindmap application was made through the Unity and Blender applications, which are commonly used for 3D modeling to make games. The map in 3D format is also applicable for people with low vision.

“There are categories for the blind, from low vision to totally blind. They all can use it and the brightness setting has been set for the visual impaired people in the low blind category,” he stated.

Currently, UBblindmap is pending submission for obtaining Intellectual Property Rights (HAKI) and for iOS users to be able to download the application.

The application is expected to help blind people as well as be a mandatory facility in campus institutions, so that campuses in Indonesia could become more friendly to blind people, Amrullah noted.

“Students are expected to make more discoveries in helping to solve daily problems,” he affirmed.

The student, who is concurrently a member of the Geoinformatics research group, was helped by two of his lecturers: Dr. Sc. Fatwa Ramdani, S.Si, M.Sc and Dr. eng. Herman Tolle, S.T., M.T.

Minister outlines strategies for recovery of tourism, creative economy

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan outlined several strategies of the government to drive recovery of the tourism and creative economy sectors amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

While opening the 2021 Tourism and Creative Economy National Coordination Meeting held virtually and observed from here on Monday, Pandjaitan stressed that this is especially important on account of the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected scores of economic activities.

The minister stated that one of the strategies was the Proud of Indonesian Products National Movement (Gernas BBI) that had been campaigned since last year.

As of July 2021, some 15 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) had migrated to a digital platform through the Gernas BBI campaign.

This year, the government is also marketing the Proud to Travel in Indonesia #DiIndonesiaAja movement that will target the domestic market.

“This strategy needs to be strengthened, starting from targeting the domestic markets since it is from these markets that the recovery of national tourism will begin,” Pandjaitan expounded.

The minister stated that the government was collaborating with several stakeholders to promote Indonesia’s culinary arts through the Indonesia Spice Up The World campaign.

Through this campaign, the government aims to export spices worth US$2 billion and establish four thousand Indonesian restaurants abroad by 2024, Pandjaitan stated.

“We are also preparing the best concept for medical tourism in tourism destinations,” he noted.

Within the games industry, the coordinating minister highlighted that the potential of the game industry in Indonesia had reached US$2 billion. He then encouraged the games industry to offer a bigger contribution.

“This is primarily for local gaming, so that it could grow domestically. I am optimistic that the Indonesian youth would come up with new innovations in video games,” Pandjaitan stated.

Baise Key Development and Opening Pilot Zone: High-level opening-up achieves high-quality development

On September 11, the Promotion Conference & Signing Ceremony of Guangxi Baise Key Development and Opening Pilot Zone was held in Nanning, on which, a total of 47 projects were signed with a total investment of RMB 31.2 billion. It has been one year since the Baise Key Development and Opening Pilot Zone was approved (hereinafter referred to as Baise Pilot Zone). Throughout the first year, Baise Pilot Zone has embraced a wider opening-up and deepened the economic and trade cooperation, stepping into the forefront of friendly relations between China and ASEAN, and playing a vital part in the construction of “the Belt and Road”, according to the Publicity Department of Baise City.

The frontier trade grows at a good momentum, whilst the transformation and upgrade of the border trade achieve initial success. Currently, Baise Pilot Zone has promoted the establishment of three processing parks, 19 processing projects of imported goods via border trade, and 20 border trade cooperatives, which has greatly stimulated the endogenous development of border trade. In 2020, facing the adverse situation caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, the frontier trade in Baise bucked the trend and increased, realizing the total import and export volume of RMB 4.7 billion, with a year-on-year growth of 59.5%. From January to July this year, the city reached RMB 23.829 billion for the export and import trade, with a year-on-year growth of 124%, ranking first in Guangxi in terms of the growth rate.

The responsible person of Jingxi Baocheng Food Co., Ltd. expressed: “The customs has taken a series of business model reforms, for example, through the reform that allows businessmen in frontier trade to transport imported goods directly to processing plants, our imported goods, such as fresh frozen shrimps, can be directly transported to the refrigerating chamber, which saves the cost and makes the customs clearance more efficient. Hence, the enterprises can operate efficiently and the dividends brought by reforms can benefit more businessmen in frontier trade.”

To provide convenient trade conditions for foreign tradesmen, Baise Pilot Zone has actively launched business models, such as “full export and full import + centralized application”, “one license for multiple orders + centralized application”, “two-step application”, and “advance application and checkpoint inspection” for the import and export on border highways. In addition, the business reforms, such as the “centralized” application of frontier trade and the policy that enables to directly transport goods to the processing plants, were implemented, which have greatly enhanced the foreign trade benefits and saved the time and cost of the consumers and merchants.

Meanwhile, Baise Pilot Zone has promoted public services, including “various matters in one system” and “one-stop services” and to realize the goal of “handling at a time”, made solid progress in developing major projects. The efficient government service has attracted the attention of many investors. According to the statistics, since Baise Pilot Zone has been approved, there have been 206 projects commenced with a total investment of RMB 198.8 billion, and 250 key projects reserved with a total investment of RMB 1.01 trillion.

Boost creative economy by offering premium products: Pandjaitan

Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan urged regional governments to create premium products and services to improve the quality of local creative products to penetrate the global market.

“I urge regional leaders to support our people to innovate to create premium products and services in respective regions,” Minister Pandjaitan stated while opening the online 2021 Tourism and Creative Economy National Coordination Meeting observed from Jakarta, Monday.

The government launched a “Proud of made in Indonesia Products” national movement campaign in 2020 in a bid to support and promote local products as well as to encourage Indonesians to laud, love, and develop local products, especially of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs), Pandjaitan stated.

The national campaign is aimed at expediting digitization of the national creative industry, and as of July 2021, some 15 million Indonesian MSMEs and local artisans had migrated to online digital platforms to expand their market reach, the coordinating minister pointed out.

“I expressed my gratitude for our cooperation, and I am optimistic that the collaboration between central and regional governments, business association and industries, and other parties would continue to encourage our creative economy business to reach the global market,” Pandjaitan stated.

To drive efforts, the government has offered a stimulus to tourism and creative economy industries, he noted.

Pandjaitan drew attention to the government-offered stimuli in the form of improvements in health facilities at five super-priority tourism destinations; discount vouchers for entrepreneurs in fashion, food and beverage and handicraft industries; and benefits for national film making industries, among others.

“Those stimuli are part of our endeavors to promote our national products. Let us wholeheartedly toil and cooperate for achieving our common goal to develop our country because I believe we could fulfill that goal,” the coordinating minister noted.

Warehouse industry has potential to boost Jakarta’s economy: BI

Warehouse industry has the potential to become a new source of income to boost economic growth in Jakarta in line with increased e-commerce trade during the pandemic, Bank Indonesia’s (BI’s) Jakarta Representative Office stated.

“After we explored, the warehousing industry is also interesting because the e-commerce business needs a warehouse,” Head of the BI’s Jakarta Representative Office Onny Widjanarko noted during the dissemination of information on Jakarta’s economic report for the August 2021 period on Monday.

According to Widjanarko, the central bank noted that Indonesia’s online trade performance had increased by an average of some 36 percent and is estimated to triple by 2025, according to reports from Google and Temasek.

Widjanarko expects warehousing to be one of the industry sectors that is able to boost retail trade performance, both in the online and offline market.

The increase in online trade also contributed to the need for a courier labor market that is not only for the delivery of goods but also food in line with the activity restrictions (PPKM) in Jakarta.

“The customers’ behavioral changes from dine in to take away has driven growth of the creative or processing industry,” he added.

Meanwhile, on the same occasion, Executive Director of the Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI) Budi Wiyono remarked that the online trading industry stood to benefit from the COVID-19 pandemic condition.

His side had created hundreds of centers as dropping points for goods in Jakarta to accommodate the high number of online trade transactions.

“In one month, we added 10 percent of our couriers. We are unable to find people because they must have a driver’s license, a motorbike, be an active taxpayer, and must understand Jakarta’s map. It is not easy,” Wiyono noted.

Wiyono later explained that online growth in trade was also due to the export and import industry that continued to grow.

In addition to the warehousing industry, Jakarta BI noted that small and medium industries that support the processing industry also had an opportunity to become a source of economic growth in Jakarta.

It recorded the performance of the manufacturing industry in the second quarter of 2021, growing by 25.28 percent as compared to the corresponding period last year on account of increased car production and electricity use in Jakarta.

The automotive industry, as a processing industry in Jakarta, holds the largest percentage growth, at 52-54 percent, followed by the chemical, food, and beverages industries.

“We have to explore the small and medium industry that supports the processing industry in Jakarta,” he emphasized.

In addition to the manufacturing industry, wholesale and retail trade, including warehousing, economic improvement in Jakarta is also supported by other industries, including the communications and financial services industries.

Trade Minister announces 36th Trade Expo Indonesia

Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi has announced the 36th Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI): Digital Edition, themed ‘Reviving Global Trade’, which is being organized as part of efforts to expedite national economic growth.

“This virtually held event is one of the forms of effort and commitment made by the Trade Ministry to revive global trade,” he said here on Monday.

The exhibition is expected to serve as a breakthrough for Indonesian entrepreneurs, who can use the opportunity to latch on to the momentum of economic recovery acceleration, he added.

The international exhibition will be held virtually for 14 days from October 21 to November 4, 2021, while the product showcase will be held until December 20, 2021, he informed.

The 36th TEI is expected to drive the acceleration of digital trade transformation, Lutfi said.

The TEI Digital Edition aims to serve as an effective and efficient online trade transaction and promotion platform, strengthen partnerships and maintain business sustainability with buyers, expand penetration to new markets, build a positive image, and improve the competitiveness of Indonesia’s products and services in the international market, the minister added.

The 2021 TEI will also feature a digital catalog, which will serve as a tool for participants and visitors to exhibit and explore information regarding Indonesian products, he said.

The Indonesian products and services that will be featured at the expo will be divided into eight categories: manufactured products, digital lifestyle and services, medical and healthcare, renewable energy, food and beverage products, living comfort and amenities, fashion and beauty products, and halal products, he informed.

“TEI 2021 is ready to provide greater amenities and comfort through an interactive platform in the form of e-catalog, much like in the large international trade exhibitions in Germany and the United Arab Emirates,” Lutfi explained.

“With this, interactive activities between sellers and buyers can proceed even better,” he added.

The TEI aims to attract as many potential buyers as possible for the benefit of Indonesian exporters, Lutfi said.

In addition to the exhibition, the latest edition of TEI will feature several activities such as trade forums, seminars, as well as business counseling, he added.

What will differentiate the forum this year is the participation of trade ministries from partner countries such as Singapore and the Philippines, WTO’s director general, and World Bank’s managing director, the minister said.

In addition, a Halal Trade Forum will be held and Primaniyarta and Primaduta awards will also be presented at the expo, he added.

“Beyond Halal Trade Forum, we are also collaborating with the Indonesia Fashion Chamber to hold Muslim fashion show and talk shows. This will be the government’s concrete step in realizing Indonesia as the center of halal products and world Muslim fashion,” Lutfi remarked.
