New research finds USD billions to coal power projects in Africa, Asia jeopardizing energy access, climate agendas

Coal Finance in High-Impact Countries

Finance Commitments for Grid-Connected Coal in High-Impact Countries (USD Million)

Chinese state-owned institutions, world’s largest banks continue to finance coal power in countries with greatest needs for electricity access; USD 42 billion committed to grid-connected coal power plants between 2013-2019 in 18 countries studied

VIENNA, Austria, Sept. 16, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — New research published today by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) highlights a troubling trend in the fight against climate change and push to deliver universal electricity access: despite environmental, economic and many other challenges facing coal, pockets of funders continue to finance additional coal-fired generation capacity in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Coal Power Finance in High-Impact Countries knowledge brief, part of SEforALL’s Energizing Finance research series, analyses 18 countries with the largest electricity access gaps (i.e. high-impact countries) to identify those receiving finance for coal-fired power, the sources of this investment, its key drivers and the risks attached.

“The idea of a coal phase-out does not hold true everywhere,” said Olivia Coldrey, Head of Energy Finance and Clean Cooking at SEforALL. “We continue to see significant investment in coal-fired power generation in countries with high rates of energy poverty. These countries need affordable, reliable and clean energy to support their socio-economic development and to mitigate climate change. Financing new coal projects is inconsistent with these objectives and holds back the energy transition.”

From 2013 to 2019, USD 42 billion was committed to grid-connected coal power plants in the 18 countries studied. Among them, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan received the majority of finance commitments to new coal plants, while in Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Niger and Tanzania all host active coal plant development.

International finance accounted for the majority of the USD 42 billion, with Chinese financial institutions accounting for 40 percent of the total.

With South Korea and Japan recently announcing they will stop financing new coal plants overseas, China remains the last major source of international public coal finance not to have committed to ending finance for overseas coal plants. This stands in contrast with China’s domestic energy policy, which is prioritizing a transition to renewable energy, peak emissions before 2030 and a net-zero economy by 2060.

Of course, China is not the only culprit. Commercial financial institutions worldwide continue to support coal power plant development indirectly, despite having implemented policies to exclude direct financing of new coal-fired generation assets. From 2016 to 2020, the 38 banks that exclude direct finance for coal-fired power plants have nonetheless provided over USD 52 billion in finance to companies engaged in coal projects (Rainforest Action Network 2021).

In addition to hampering global efforts to curb carbon emissions and achieve net-zero by 2050, coal power finance carries substantial socio-economic risks for the countries that host projects, leading increasingly to stranded assets. The brief demonstrates how infrastructure constraints and lower than expected demand in Bangladesh and Pakistan have resulted in underutilization and, in some cases, switching off of newly commissioned coal-fired power plants.

The world’s 20 least-electrified countries by percentage of population without electricity are all in Sub-Saharan Africa. Should Sub-Saharan African nations continue to develop new coal-fired power generation capacity, they are likely to face similar challenges and costs to those seen in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The long development timelines associated with coal plants and their supporting infrastructure will further slow the closing of electricity access gaps.

The brief makes the case that distributed renewable energy generation provides the fastest and most efficient path to increased electricity access in the near-term. It recommends a paradigm shift from centralized coal to distributed renewable energy generation to rapidly expand electricity access in high-impact countries, not only for residential household use, but at access tiers that support economic growth.

Ahead of this year’s UN High-level Dialogue on Energy and COP26, the brief recommends a reevaluation of the current geography-based carbon accounting system, which allocates emissions to countries based on their physical origin. Instead, implementing a finance-based carbon accounting regime would force policymakers to consider the impact of domestic capital on cross-border emissions and push private investors to align their portfolios with the net-zero ambitions they support.

The full knowledge brief is available here.

Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy Commemorates the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks with Love, Peace, and Conscience

Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy: Nearly a quarter of a century of human rights violations by the Taiwanese government cannot quench Tai Ji Men’s love and concern for the world

Tai Ji Men Members Speak Out in Front of the UN Headquarters

Members of the Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy and Action Alliance to Redress 1219 protest against the Taiwanese government’s violations of Tai Ji Men’s human rights in front of the United Nations Headquarters.

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — September 11, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. On this historic day, over 30 volunteers from Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy and Action Alliance to Redress 1219 (ACT 1219) gathered in front of the United Nations building and other locations in New York to pray for the city, the U.S. and the world, wishing that everyone’s conscience will be awakened, disasters will be prevented, and a world of love and peace will be realized.

Three of the volunteers witnessed the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago. Pamela Chen, a Tai Ji Men member from Los Angeles, arrived in New York on the morning of September 11, 2021. Shortly after landing in the Big Apple, she and other Tai Ji Men members gathered in front of the United Nations Headquarters to spread love, peace, and conscience to New York, the U.S. and the world through their dancing and singing. They also visited Times Square, the Manhattan Neighborhood Network TV Station, Ground Zero, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and other locations to spread the idea of conscience, love, and peace.

Pamela said that 20 years ago, she witnessed the two planes crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The city was instantly engulfed in terror and confusion, and everyone was desperate to flee. Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze, the leader of Tai Ji Men, and Tai Ji Men members did not leave New York. On September 12, 2001, at the invitation of the Manhattan MNN Television, he led Tai Ji Men to host a ceremony of ringing the Bell of World Peace and Love to pray for the victims, New York, and the U.S. He prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace, as well as for the living to be comforted. Traffic in Manhattan was halted at the time, and people were panicking as if it were a world war. The suffering inflicted by the terrorist acts has made people all across the world yearn for peace more than ever. Even though getting around was difficult and some UN ambassadors had to walk for hours to reach the MNN TV station, many arrived at the bell ringing ceremony venue to ring the Bell and make wishes for peace, safeguarding love and peace with concrete action.

Lung Ogle, another Tai Ji Men member, was also present during the 9/11 attacks. Despite being over 80 years old, she managed to travel from Florida to New York on this significant day 20 years later to express her best wishes to the victims, the city, the United States, and the world. She visited the MNN TV Station with a group of Tai Ji Men members. In addition to sharing her vivid memory of the ceremony of ringing the Bell of World Peace and Love 20 years ago right after the 9/11 attacks, she expressed her gratitude to the TV station for broadcasting the program produced by Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze, titled “Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the September 11 Attacks with Love, Peace and Conscience,” which reminds global citizens to awaken their conscience and respect one another with love and tolerance, as well as urges those in power to administer policies with conscience and avoid violating their people’s human rights. The 90-minute program broadcast on the TV station’s various channels on September 11 and 12 will be repeated on September 15.

In addition to promoting the message of love, peace, and conscience, the volunteers also held signs protesting against the Taiwanese government’s disregard for the rule of law, violation of their human rights, and allowing a few rogue bureaucrats to persecute Tai Ji Men’s master and disciples for nearly 25 years. They chanted slogans in Times Square, such as, “The Taiwanese government has persecuted Tai Ji Men and violated their human rights. The Taiwanese government robbed the leader of Tai Ji Men of his property and failed to return his money. Rectify the false Tai Ji Men case. Return to Tai Ji Men its sacred land. Taiwan’s democracy, Go! Go! Go!” Many onlookers were intrigued and inquired about the case with the volunteers. They expressed surprise that such an unjust case occurred in Taiwan.

Their protest drew the attention of nearby police officers. The volunteers described the objective of their demonstration and stated that for the past 20 years, they have been fighting for justice while spreading love and peace. They utilize their own experiences of victimization to convey the value and significance of freedom and human rights to the rest of the world, in the hopes that there would be no more unjust cases and the world would be at peace. The police officers were moved by the volunteers’ efforts and inquired if they required any assistance.

This group of volunteers stayed in New York for only 10 hours. They took real action to support New Yorkers and pray for the world when they returned to New York 20 years later. They hope that global citizens will rise above history’s scars, care for one another, transcend differences and animosity, and work together to address the world’s current issues. They also believe that the combined efforts from world citizens will prevent future calamities and that love should be practiced to create an era of conscience where everyone enjoys freedom, equality, love, and peace.

Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy: Tai Ji Men is an ancient menpai (similar to school) of qigong, martial arts, and self-cultivation. It has carried forward the wisdom of Daoist philosophy, one of the highest philosophies of humankind. It is an international nonprofit cultural organization. Its contemporary zhang-men-ren (grandmaster), Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze established the Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy in 1966, and since then it has grown to 15 academies worldwide.

Dr. Hong teaches his dizi (similar to disciples) methods to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual balance, and tens of thousands of families have benefited from his teaching. At Tai Ji Men, martial arts and wisdom have been passed down from the shifu (master) to his dizi. Through this time-honored tradition, the shifu and dizi promote the Tai Ji Men culture and martial arts around the world while embodying what is true, good, and beautiful as well as spreading the ideas of conscience, love, and peace. Over the past half-century, the shifu and dizi have self-funded trips to over 300 cities in 101 nations to conduct more than 3,000 cultural performances and exchanges and have been recognized as “International Ambassadors of Peace and Goodwill.”

Aceh students produce 1.2 tons of agricultural products annually: govt

Vocational high school (SMK) and high school students in Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District produce 1.2 tons of agricultural products every year, including in 2021, an official from the Regional Education Office said.

“The accumulation of vocational and high school student products per year is up to 1.2 tons; this is also our commitment that must be fulfilled to entrepreneurs and parties or companies,” Head of the Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar Regional Education Office Mohd Iqbal informed here on Wednesday.

Iqbal said that the 1.2 tons of agricultural commodities produced by the students were not processed into food and other ingredients, but were in the form of plants such as oranges, lemons, organic rice, organic chilies, and organic potatoes.

Then, many of those agricultural products are processed into local products that can be consumed, such as Acehnese food or drinks, he said.

“Some are commodity products, and some have been processed, for example, (to make) perfume, lemon drinks, chips, and various other processed products,” he informed.

Iqbal said that the students planted the crops directly on approximately 15 hectares of land spread across Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. The farming area belongs to the SMK.

The processed products of the SMK were accommodated by many entrepreneurs in Aceh for later remarketing, he added.

Therefore, Iqbal said that his office will continue to maximize production of students’ agricultural products. For that reason, in the near future, a product exhibition will be held and guests ranging from entrepreneurs to teachers will be invited so that the demand increases, he added.

“We will maximize this because if the SMK product runs, the economic sector will move, and it could reduce poverty; even students will be challenged to compete with other products,” he said.

Five villages covered under Balikpapan house gas pipeline project

The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry and Balikpapan authority, under a public-private partnership scheme, have continued the cooking gas pipeline project for houses in the city.

“The project is planned to start in 2021 and be completed in 2024,” Balikpapan Mayor Rahmad Mas’ud stated in Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan, Wednesday.

Currently, installation of the gas pipeline network is centered in Central Balikpapan Sub-district, with a projected target of 16 thousand homes connected to the gas network.

The mayor noted that the first phase of the project targets the five Balikpapan villages of Graha Indah, Telaga Sari, Baru Ilir, Sepinggan, and Manggar.

Upon completion of the first installation phase, the gas network installation would continue to the rest of the 28 sub-districts of Balikpapan, with the expected pipe network connectivity reaching 190 thousand households.

Mayor Mas’ud pointed out that the monthly gas usage in homes connected with gas pipelines was significantly lower than that by an LPG gas cylinder commonly used in Indonesian households.

On the similar lines, Balikpapan resident Sunarti found it convenient after the pipe gas connection at her house, and consequently, her gas expenses too reduced significantly.

“Before my house was connected to the gas pipe network, I had to spend Rp35 thousand (around US$2.45) for two 3-kg LPG gas cylinders. If the 3-kg gas cylinder suddenly becomes scarce, it is difficult to purchase the cylinder, as the price rises,” Sunarti pointed out.

Currently, Sunarti only has to pay Rp21 thousand (around US$1.47) for the monthly usage of gas, and she no longer needs to change gas cylinders every week.

The Balikpapan cooking gas pipe network is provided by the state-owned PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur that supplies the gas produced from their refinery in Balikpapan Bay. The pipe network leading to every stove in connected houses is equipped with a safety valve, thereby ensuring safety of the residents.
