Washington: The United States announced a 19% reciprocal tax on Thailand, alongside similar tariffs on Cambodia and Malaysia, which took effect today. This decision was communicated by US President Donald Trump, marking a significant trade policy shift aimed at addressing trade imbalances with these nations. According to Thai News Agency, the announcement has prompted responses from the affected countries, particularly Thailand. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira emphasized the thorough efforts of Team Thailand in navigating the negotiations. The team worked diligently to offer terms that would preserve Thailand's interests as much as possible. Chunhavajira highlighted that all negotiation issues were subjected to in-depth analysis to serve the nation's best interests. He expressed hope that the outcomes of these negotiations would meet or exceed expectations, but also asked for understanding in case they do not. The Deputy Prime Minister conveyed gratitude for the support receiv ed and expressed optimism that the country would overcome this challenge through collective cooperation and encouragement.
