Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival Kicks Off Amid Economic Challenges

Ubon ratchathani: The candle procession tradition in Ubon Ratchathani has begun, attracting many Thai and foreign tourists eager to admire the candle trees' beauty. This year's festival will be held over two days, July 10-11, showcasing 44 candles in the competition, a decrease from the usual 50-plus entries.

According to Thai News Agency, the sluggish economy has led to fewer temples participating in the competition this year. The festival commenced with the procession featuring the royal candle from His Majesty King Rama X. Both sides of the road were lined with spectators, highlighting the event's draw despite economic challenges.

In Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, a unique candle procession takes place on the water at Ban Paen Market, Sena District. This year, 73 boats will participate, starting from Wat Khok Suea, Ban Paen Subdistrict, Sena District, and traveling over 2 km along the Noi River to the Sena District Office. The candles will be distributed to five temples along the river.

On the riverbank, a candle procession with over 2,000 dancers from various sub-districts in Sena District adds to the festivities. The dancers, from in front of Sena Sena Prasit School, proceed along Wilai Sena Road, passing the municipal market, with each procession beautifully decorated and performing dances.
