Seoul: U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his willingness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, amid rumors the two could meet during his visit to South Korea this month. Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One en route from Malaysia to Japan on Monday, said he would be open to a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if Kim wanted to meet him, marking another time Trump has spoken about a meeting with Kim after having mentioned it several times before.
According to Thai News Agency, the US leader's remarks fueled speculation that Trump could meet Kim during his visit to South Korea this week, and when asked by reporters if he might extend his trip to meet the North Korean leader, Trump said he would be happy to do so if Kim wanted to meet him.
Trump said he and Kim got along well, that he liked Kim, and that Kim liked him too. During his first term as president, Trump met with Kim three times between 2018 and 2019: the first time in Singapore, the second time in Vietnam, and the last time in the demilitarized zone village of Panmunjom, the border between the two Koreas. Trump made history by becoming the first US leader to set foot in North Korean territory on June 30, 2019.
