Chanthaburi: A tornado swept through several areas of Chanthaburi Province, severely impacting durian orchards in Village No. 9, Chaman Subdistrict, Makham District. The natural disaster led to the destruction of dozens of tons of durians that were close to harvest. Orchard owners are now facing significant losses, as they await traders willing to purchase the damaged "wind durians" at a reduced price of 10 baht per kilogram, significantly lower than the usual market price of 150-170 baht per kilogram.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Warunee, one of the orchard owners, reported that the tornado struck at 5 pm, accompanied by heavy rain. Within a short span of less than five minutes, the storm had caused considerable damage, resulting in approximately three tons of Monthong durians being blown down. Additionally, seven durian trees were either broken or toppled, leading to an estimated financial loss of several hundred thousand baht.
Mr. Prasit, the village headman of Village No. 9, Tambon Chaman, conducted an inspection of the affected areas following the storm. He noted that around 20 orchard owners suffered damages, with an estimated 40-50 tons of durian produce affected, culminating in a financial impact of approximately 8.5 million baht. Furthermore, a nearby house experienced roof tile damage due to the strong winds, prompting local authorities to expedite repairs.
In Chaiyaphum Province, a concurrent summer storm caused extensive damage, toppling more than 20 houses in Wang Ta Khe Subdistrict and leading to power outages across three villages. The storm felled large trees onto high-voltage power lines, resulting in overnight electricity disruptions for over a thousand households. Local officials, in coordination with community leaders, have been working to assess and address the damage, with particular attention to homes that sustained roof damage and waterlogged interiors.
Mr. Wanlop, the headman of Wang Ta Khae Subdistrict, explained that the storm's powerful winds led to the collapse of power poles and snapped power lines, leaving the area without electricity. Efforts are underway to restore power and clear roadways obstructed by fallen trees.
In a related incident in Na Yang Klak Subdistrict, Thepsathit District, lightning struck a coconut tree, causing a fire that threatened a nearby house. Prompt action by local officials helped contain the blaze before it could spread further.
The weather forecast suggests continued summer storms in the upper part of Thailand, with the possibility of thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail in certain areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed weather warnings, especially during the upcoming Songkran Festival, when travel and outdoor events are prevalent.
