Narathiwat: "Thaksin" has revealed his recent visit to the southern border provinces, focusing on resolving economic and drug-related challenges. He emphasized that through discussions, the ongoing issues in the southern region could be addressed. Meanwhile, officials have confirmed the safety of the area around Narathiwat Airport, ensuring that flights remain unaffected. The Prachachat Party disclosed that the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) had invited him to share his insights on regional development.
According to Thai News Agency, on 23 February 2025, at 10:40 a.m., Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, serving as an Advisor to the ASEAN Chairman, alongside Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, and Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice and leader of the Prachachat Party, visited Wat Prachumchonthara in Narathiwat Province. They paid homage to Phra Thammachachariyachan, with local residents present to welcome them.
Shortly after, at 10:50 a.m., Mr. Thaksin engaged with local leaders and Thai Buddhist network representatives to discuss regional development at Wat Prachum Chonthara. The meeting aimed to strategize on enhancing the quality of life and fostering sustainable peace in the area. This visit was part of an initiative by the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) to gather valuable input from various stakeholders.
The field visit included forums where public, religious leaders, civil servants, academics, business representatives, and civil society organizations could share their insights on the challenges and potential policy solutions for the southern border region. The feedback is intended to inform strategies that could be implemented at both local and ASEAN levels, particularly in collaboration with Malaysia.
Mr. Thaksin underscored the significance of addressing economic and drug issues, stressing the importance of dialogue in finding solutions. He stated that cooperation and open communication among all parties are crucial for progress.
In a separate incident, Captain Santi Kesriphongsa of the Royal Thai Navy confirmed that the area around Narathiwat Airport was safe following an explosion-like sound from a parked pickup truck. Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers conducted a thorough inspection, and it was confirmed that the incident posed no threat to flight operations.
The occurrence coincided with the presence of key figures such as Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Lieutenant Colonel Trakoon Totham, Governor of Narathiwat Province, who were in the area to welcome Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai and his team.
