Thaksin Advocates Community Engagement in Drug Suppression Efforts

Bangkok: "Thaksin" has showcased his commitment to tackling drug addiction and trafficking by volunteering to engage directly with communities to identify drug dealers. He has also proposed the establishment of treatment centers across 700 districts, while emphasizing the need to address transnational drug networks without showing leniency to groups like the Wa, who are involved in the drug trade.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, the Minister of Justice, presided over the 3/2025 meeting of the Committee to Monitor and Expedite the Operation of Prevention, Suppression, and Solving Drug Problems. During this assembly, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister and current Advisor to the ASEAN Chairman, delivered a significant lecture titled 'Drugs, Transnational Crime, Perspectives and Challenges to Sustainable Problem Solving.' His presentation covered the drug situation in Thailand and the ASEAN region, offering policy recommendations and integration strategies for current Thai society.

Pol. Col. Thawee highlighted that the meeting, attended by 600 police chiefs and provincial public health governors, marked a pivotal moment in drug problem resolution. He noted that drug issues are cross-border threats intertwined with money laundering and human trafficking. Despite significant seizures in recent years, domestic demand remains critical. The importance of Mr. Thaksin's insights was underscored by the ongoing challenges.

In his address, Mr. Thaksin stressed the urgency of addressing methamphetamine abuse, which he described as devastating to Thai youth. He criticized the lack of integration and clear direction in current efforts, expressing his readiness to actively participate in community-level interventions. Reflecting on past successes and current obstacles, he proposed reducing the number of agencies involved in drug suppression for more effective coordination.

Mr. Thaksin emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly with neighboring countries, to tackle production sources like the Wa in the Golden Triangle. He advocated for clear strategies and unwavering resolve in dealing with these entities, urging diplomatic initiatives to curb narcotics production.

He further elaborated on the need for comprehensive approaches involving law enforcement, education, and public health. Mr. Thaksin called for the establishment of treatment centers in every district, funded by a proposed 3.5 billion baht budget. He also advocated for educational reforms to instill knowledge from an early age.

Addressing the Justice Minister's concerns about kratom and cannabis issues, Mr. Thaksin suggested that control measures should precede any legal amendments. He warned against ignorance and emphasized the need for informed decision-making.

The meeting saw participation from high-level officials, including Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers from various departments, who discussed progress in drug trafficking suppression and rehabilitation systems. The collaborative effort aims to implement proactive measures and address risk areas effectively.
