PPRP Criticizes 157 Billion Baht Economic Stimulus Budget, Cites Cronyism Concerns

Bangkok: The Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) has voiced its disagreement with the government's proposed 157 billion baht economic stimulus budget. The party argues that the budget lacks a clear master plan and is likely to benefit political cronies rather than address the economic challenges faced by local communities. Mr. Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, Deputy Leader for Economic Affairs, alongside other party leaders, expressed these concerns following a meeting chaired by Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, the Party Leader.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting of the PPRP Executive Committee and other party members focused on the draft of the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Act. The party believes that the economic stimulus project, approved by the Cabinet, fails to provide a concrete plan to uplift local economies and address the economic difficulties of the populace. Mr. Thirachai criticized the allocation, stating that it is not aligned with the needs of grassroots communities and lacks transparency.

Mr. Thirachai outlined several issues with the budget, emphasizing that it does not strengthen communities, fails to improve the country's efficiency, and does not safeguard against corruption. The rapid approval process by the cabinet raised suspicions about the potential misuse of funds for non-essential projects. He advocated for a shift in focus towards community-level infrastructure projects that directly support local economies, such as agricultural tools that could reduce costs and increase income.

Mr. Chaimongkol Chairob, another deputy leader, highlighted concerns over the rationale behind the budget's distribution. He suggested that the budget's allocation lacks clear criteria and appears to favor political allies, leading to suspicions of improper benefits and collusion between government officials and local politicians. The PPRP views the budget as a missed opportunity to address the widespread economic distress and believes the funds should focus more on genuine community benefits rather than political gains.

The Palang Pracharath Party's stance is that the 157 billion baht budget does not adequately respond to the urgent economic needs of citizens and disproportionately favors ministries aligned with the government. The party's leaders insist that the budget should prioritize transparency and the welfare of local communities to avoid benefiting political allies at the expense of the broader population.
