Thailand to Host Trilateral Meeting with China and Myanmar to Combat Transnational Crimes

Bangkok: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to hold a trilateral meeting of three countries soon.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Maris Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the upcoming tripartite meeting between Thailand, China, and Myanmar. The meeting aims to establish a framework for tackling transnational crimes such as scammers and call center gangs in a comprehensive and enduring manner.

Mr. Maris underscored the consistent efforts by the Thai government to address these issues. Consequently, the Chinese government has coordinated with Thailand to send representatives to assist in suppressing call center gangs in neighboring regions. This initiative reflects the necessity for robust cooperation with relevant countries to effectively address transnational crimes. Thailand is prepared to collaborate with all nations willing to tackle this issue under the Thai government's supervision.

Furthermore, Mr. Maris highlighted the government's strategic actions in engaging with foreign leaders, particularly Myanmar and China, during cooperation framework meetings. Notable discussions included the informal BIMSTEC foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India, in July 2024, where collaboration to curb cybercrime and arms smuggling was emphasized. Additionally, the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework meeting in Chiang Mai Province in August 2024 addressed internet fraud, with the Thai government advocating for increased cooperation to combat cross-border crimes.

Significant meetings like the Six Country Informal Consultation in Bangkok in December 2024 further illustrated Thailand's commitment to promoting peace and security in border areas, focusing on drug trafficking and online fraud. At the Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Malaysia in January, the importance of protecting citizens from such threats was reiterated. These initiatives mark progress in suppressing transnational crimes and strengthening regional security.
