Bangkok: Thailand and Sweden have officially elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, marking a significant step in leveraging both countries' strengths for joint development across various sectors. According to Thai News Agency, this development was formalized through an agreement signed by Mr. Maris Sngiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, and Ms. Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden. The strategic partnership aims to bolster industrial integration and enhance cooperation in areas such as technology, green energy, and medical research. Mr. Maris held discussions with Swedish business leaders, including representatives from companies like AstraZeneca, Electrolux, and Ericsson, highlighting Thailand's strategic location as a bridge between the Western and Eastern worlds within the ASEAN region. He emphasized the potential for Swedish investment in Thailand, particularly in technology sectors such as AI and data centers, and the oppo rtunities for Thai industries to integrate into the global supply chain. The meeting with Swedish business leaders aligns with the Thai government's goal to diversify its business landscape by integrating more deeply into the industrial value chain. This includes a focus on joint research and development initiatives with Sweden, leveraging Sweden's strong educational infrastructure and expertise in technology. Mr. Maris underscored Thailand's strategic location and the country's readiness to act as a global connectivity point, which has been a significant attraction for Swedish investors. He pointed out the country's robust educational infrastructure, with scientists and engineers ready to advance science and technology-based businesses, adding value throughout the production process. Both countries have agreed to draft an Action Plan to support private sector collaborations in green transition, green energy, and education. This initiative aims to foster sustainable development and leverage the strengths o f both nations' private sectors. During bilateral discussions, Mr. Maris presented the situation regarding Thai-Cambodian border tensions, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter. He highlighted Sweden's support, especially following the Gripen purchase agreement, which underscores the mutual trust between the two countries. The signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement reflects the longstanding relationship between Thailand and Sweden, dating back to the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation signed in 1868. Currently, over 100 Swedish companies operate in Thailand, and there are significant people-to-people ties, with over 220,000 Swedes visiting Thailand annually and around 70,000 Thais residing in Sweden. This partnership is poised to drive forward cooperation in all sectors, reinforcing the shared commitment to future collaboration.
