Bangkok: Thai snooker enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate as the Kiatthada Snooker and Academy officially opens its doors, marking a significant milestone in the country's sports landscape. Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, presided over the inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility, which is set to serve as the headquarters of the Billiards Association of Thailand. The center, strategically located in the Sukonthasawat area, will cater to both national and international standards of billiards and snooker training and competitions. The event was graced by the presence of Sunthorn Jaruman, also known as "Big Hong," the President of the Billiards Association of Thailand, along with the association's executive committee and a host of snooker and billiards athletes.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong praised Mr. Sunthorn Jaruman for his efforts in elevating the standard of billiards in Thailand through the establishment of the Kiatthada Billiards Sports Center. This venue is envisioned to become a hub for world-class training and competition, strengthening Thailand's presence on the global snooker stage.
Addressing the contentious issue of the Gambling Act, Mr. Sorawong acknowledged the challenges faced by the Thai snooker community in lifting the outdated perception of snooker as a form of gambling. He highlighted that while many Thai sports have achieved world-class recognition, outdated laws still categorize snooker under gambling. Notably, a poker tournament was recently held, and there are plans to include poker in the Asian Games. Mr. Sorawong assured that his team is actively reviewing the Gambling Act and is committed to working on both sports concurrently.
The Minister emphasized that the challenge lies not in the legislative process but in changing societal perceptions. "Today, we're bold enough to declare poker a sport, no different than snooker. But we need to get Thais to accept it," he stated. He expressed confidence that the distinction between sports and gambling will be clarified, with many snooker players serving as exemplary role models.
Sunthorn Jaramon expressed his gratitude towards Mr. Songwong Thienthong for his support and participation in the opening ceremony. He expressed delight over the government's recognition of poker and snooker as legitimate sports, highlighting snooker's global popularity and its substantial audience at both national and international levels.
Following the ceremony, attendees were treated to a special snooker match between former world-class players Watana Phu-ob-om, known as "Tong Sitchoi," and Stephen Lee. The friendly match showcased their skills and techniques, providing an entertaining and lively experience for all present.
