Bangkok: The Security Committee organized a seminar on Thai border security, inviting both security agencies and international agencies to discuss the impact of war refugees in Myanmar.
According to Thai News Agency, the House of Representatives Committee on State Security, Thai Border Affairs, National Strategy and Reform coordinated the seminar, focusing on enhancing security and fostering peace along Thailand's borders. The event aimed to encourage collaboration among local and neighboring countries to mitigate border conflicts and discuss sustainable peace and security solutions. Key participants included Major General Witthaya Semathong, Director of the Operations Office, Department of Army Operations, and Lieutenant General Nattapong Paokaew, Director of the Military Border Affairs Department. The seminar also included representatives from the National Cyber Security Agency, the ASEAN-Australia Anti-Human Trafficking Project Team, and the ASEAN Parliamentary Assembly for Human Rights.
Mr. Rangsiman Rome, MP of the Prachachon Party and Chairman of the National Security Committee, highlighted the seminar's focus on the challenges posed by the influx of refugees from Myanmar into Thailand. He noted the strain on medical facilities along the border, with some hospitals facing financial difficulties due to the increased demand for services from Myanmar nationals. The seminar also addressed ongoing issues such as call center scams and drug trafficking, emphasizing the broader impact of Myanmar's internal problems on Thailand. Discussions centered on the roles of ASEAN and Thailand in addressing these challenges.
Military representatives also participated in the dialogue, discussing potential solutions to the border issues. The seminar served as a platform for both international and Thai participants to exchange ideas and strategize on resolving the ongoing challenges effectively.
