Thai-Myanmar Border Rivers Contaminated with Arsenic

Mae Sai: At present, the rivers separating the Thai-Myanmar border in the North, both the Kok River and the Sai River, have been found to contain arsenic that exceeds the standard several times and flows into the Mekong River in many countries, affecting the lives of many people, especially the Mae Sai border community. If there is a major flood like last year, water and mud contaminated with toxic substances will flow in as well. Therefore, a plan must be prepared to reduce the impact as much as possible.

According to Thai News Agency, the contamination poses a significant threat to the local environment and public health. The presence of arsenic in the water not only endangers the aquatic life but also has severe implications for the communities relying on these rivers for their daily water needs. The local authorities are urged to develop and implement effective strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of this contamination.

Efforts to address the issue include monitoring water quality and raising awareness among the affected communities. The potential for a major flood, similar to last year's, heightens the urgency for robust preventive measures. The local government and environmental agencies are called to collaborate in planning and executing emergency response strategies to safeguard the impacted populations.
