Bangkok: The Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces has emphasized the importance of careful consideration across all dimensions in efforts to protect national sovereignty. This statement comes in response to recent remarks by former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who suggested that the Cambodian military possesses the capability to strike as far as Bangkok.
According to Thai News Agency, General Songwit Noonpakdee, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, addressed concerns regarding Hun Sen's statements. He highlighted that the military's duty is to adhere to constitutional principles to maintain sovereignty and to protect the people within the nation's borders. The armed forces are committed to their responsibilities and are urging both soldiers and civilians to remain steadfast amidst potential psychological warfare.
The Commander-in-Chief elaborated that the ongoing situation at the Thai-Cambodian border is currently managed by the 2nd Army Area. The Defense Council has not advanced beyond this level for an emergency response plan. The Special Operations Center for the Administration of the Situation on the Thai-Cambodian Border (SOC) is actively engaged in monitoring and discussing potential developments, allowing for informed decision-making.
Regarding recent security incidents in the southern economic zone, Gen. Songwit noted that law enforcement agencies primarily manage these situations. He mentioned that military and police intelligence units, including the Security Center (SCCC) and the Special Branch Police, are collaborating continuously. Furthermore, routine training exercises involving various special operations units, the police, and the Air Force are underway to ensure preparedness.
When questioned about his support for the Prime Minister, Gen. Songwit refrained from commenting, reiterating the army's commitment to uphold sovereignty in accordance with constitutional mandates.
