Thai Government Rejects International Court’s Role in Border Dispute

Bangkok: The Pheu Thai deputy spokesperson has reaffirmed that the government does not accept the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in resolving Thailand's border issues. The statement emphasizes that Cambodia cannot unilaterally determine the outcome without Thailand's agreement.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Payu Nuengjamnong, deputy spokesman of the Pheu Thai Party, addressed the current state of relations between Thailand and Cambodia. He highlighted the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) as the chosen mechanism for peaceful negotiations, rooted in mutual respect for sovereignty. Although a permanent resolution has not been achieved, the ongoing discussions are seen as a positive development, favoring negotiation over conflict.

Mr. Payu further stressed the importance of supporting the JBC meetings as the safest means to resolve border issues. He expressed hope that these efforts would restore bilateral relations to the stability seen in 2024. The Thai government has been proactive in preventing impacts on energy security and the economy, reflecting prudent management.

The Pheu Thai Party supports the government's commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and bilateral negotiation, rejecting the International Court's authority over Thailand's border disputes. Mr. Payu reiterated that the court's process cannot proceed without Thailand's consent.

Regarding Cambodia's filing with the World Court, Mr. Payu acknowledged this stance but noted that the Pheu Thai Party and the Prime Minister have not yet discussed the matter. He indicated that further details would be provided by the Prime Minister in due course.
