Bangkok: The Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration has disclosed that local residents in seven border provinces are fully motivated and actively participating in evacuation rehearsals as part of standard procedures.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaiwat Junthiraphong, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, addressed the media before a National Security Council meeting regarding the unrest at the Thai-Cambodian border. He emphasized that the ongoing evacuation drills are part of routine preparedness measures and urged residents not to panic. The drills ensure that everyone involved knows their responsibilities, allowing for immediate action if necessary.
When questioned about the sufficiency of bunkers, Mr. Chaiwat assured that there are plans for alternative evacuation routes in areas lacking adequate facilities. He mentioned that in such cases, residents would be directed to more accommodating areas.
In response to inquiries about Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul's involvement, Mr. Chaiwat stated that Mr. Anutin is currently abroad and would need to be consulted about his potential visit to inspect the areas.
Addressing concerns about Ubon Ratchathani being a high-risk area, Mr. Chaiwat clarified that risk levels are uniform across the provinces, which is why the evacuation plan encompasses all seven regions. He noted that the evacuation drills, including those in Koh Kood involving live-fire exercises, are standard practices coordinated with Cambodian authorities.
Mr. Chaiwat reassured that the local populace remains confident in the government's protective measures, stating, "The morale of the local people is already at 100%. As this is a Thai area, everyone must have confidence in the process of care from the government."
Regarding the formation of security teams, Mr. Chaiwat explained that the Department is establishing village security teams using locally trained personnel to ensure the safety of residents. Discussions about future border checkpoint closures would align with government policy, and he reiterated the importance of remaining calm.
