Thai Animal Feed Market Thrives in Europe With Belgium Leading the Surge

Bangkok: The Thai animal feed market is enjoying significant popularity among European consumers, with sales experiencing a continuous rise in 2024. The robust export activities to Belgium alone have reached a remarkable value of 3 billion US dollars, prompting the government to underscore its commitment to supporting the industry across all dimensions.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted the government's strategic initiatives aimed at promoting international economic growth and enhancing the export potential of Thai products. A comprehensive survey conducted by the Department of International Trade Promotion identified the Belgian pet food market as a particularly promising sector, driven by the increased prevalence of pet ownership. Recent data from the Office of International Trade Promotion in The Hague, Netherlands, indicates that over 66% of Belgian households now own at least one pet, with cats being the most favored, followed by dogs.

Mr. Anukul pointed out that the growing number of pet owners in Belgium suggests that pets have become integral to the daily lives of people globally. Consequently, the Belgian pet food market is projected to be valued at 808.65 million euros in 2025. To capitalize on this opportunity and cater to the Belgian market's needs, Thailand is focusing on developing marketing strategies that prioritize the creation of new pet food products tailored to specific pet needs, including breed-specific food, specialized diets for pets with illnesses, and food for elderly pets. Emphasis is placed on quality, natural, and organic ingredients while eliminating harmful additives.

Thailand stands as the fourth-largest pet food exporter worldwide, with over 80 manufacturing facilities, primarily producing OEM products for an array of brands. In 2024, the country's total pet food export value surged to 3,029.30 million USD, marking a 22.92% increase, with Belgian exports alone witnessing an 87.86% rise to 36.21 million USD. Belgium ranks as the third-largest pet food importer in the European Union, following Italy and Germany, underscoring the trust and preference for Thai products. Mr. Anukul emphasized the necessity for manufacturers and exporters to prioritize product quality, alongside a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, including the use of eco-friendly packaging and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
