Ministry of Commerce to Permit Import of Antique Cars as Part of Soft Power Initiative

Bangkok: The Ministry of Commerce is set to allow the import of antique cars in a move to support the government's Soft Power policy. Mr. Karom Polpornklang, the deputy government spokesman, announced that the Department of Foreign Trade has introduced a draft announcement concerning the importation of used cars, which previously prohibited or required permission for such imports. The draft now includes provisions to allow antique cars, classified under Customs Tariff Category 97.06, to be brought into the Kingdom.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Karom highlighted that importing antique cars will bolster related activities such as contests, exhibitions, and caravans. This initiative aims to enhance tourism in Thailand and boost spending by both foreign tourists and Thai residents. Additionally, it seeks to advance the antique car restoration industry and support Thai SMEs, positioning Thailand as a regional hub for antique cars. This development is intended to establish the country as a cultural center for the preservation and trade of antique vehicles.

Mr. Karom further explained that the government's promotion of antique cars aligns with its soft power strategy and aims to elevate Thai culture, the visual arts industry, and creative tourism. The initiative is anticipated to increase domestic and foreign spending, benefiting entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and the art and antique car business. This approach is expected to generate added value for the Thai economy by integrating antique cars into the broader cultural and economic landscape.
