Bangkok: Thai and Lao leaders have reinforced their diplomatic ties by witnessing the exchange of memorandums of understanding and the handover of various forms of assistance. This event marks a significant step in their long-standing relationship, which spans over 75 years.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Thailand, and Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, participated in the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations. This included a significant agreement between the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Bank) and the Agricultural Promotion Bank of Laos, signed by Mr. Chalat Rattanabunnithi, Managing Director of EXIM Bank.
The event also saw the Thai government presenting financial support worth 10,000,000 baht for a Thai-Lao cooperation project aimed at intercepting precursor drugs. Police Major Suriya Singhakamon, Secretary-General of the Narcotics Control Board, represented Thailand in this initiative.
In addition, an anti-venom serum valued at 875,000 baht was handed over by Mr. Chulawat Narinthrangkun Na Ayutthaya, Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation. Mr. Chulawat also facilitated the delivery of equipment to support vocational training for Lao workers, valued at 1,495,930 baht.
Furthermore, academic assistance for the detailed design of the Phase 2 Water Supply System Development Project in Laos, estimated at 30,000,000 baht, was provided by Mr. Jak Bun-Long from the Office of Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation (Public Organization).
Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Government Spokesperson, emphasized that these initiatives are a testament to the robust relationship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, touching upon various sectors such as economics, labor, development, academics, and public health. The efforts are aimed at enhancing the quality of life, promoting economic stability, and encouraging sustainable social development.
Following these formalities, the Thai delegation, led by the Prime Minister, is set to visit the Presidential Palace of the Lao PDR to meet with President Thongloun Sisoulith. The visit will be followed by a luncheon at the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane.
