South Korea Enhances Security for Upcoming APEC Summit

Gyeongju: South Korea has tightened security measures in the southeastern city of Gyeongju as world leaders and delegations arrive for the APEC summit and related meetings.

According to Thai News Agency, the 32nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and related meetings will run from October 29 to November 1. Most leaders and delegations will fly into Busan’s Gimhae International Airport and then travel by motorcade to Gyeongju, a distance of about 82 kilometers. Security measures have been heightened throughout the city, particularly around the Bomun Tourist Complex, the summit venue and where many of the leaders will be staying during the meetings. Anti-drone systems, helicopters, and armored vehicles will also be deployed to further secure the area on November 1, the final day of the summit.

APEC has 21 member economies. Leaders scheduled to arrive yesterday afternoon include Peru and Taiwan, while leaders scheduled to arrive today include New Zealand, Russia, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Thailand, and the United States. Leaders of China, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Chile, Malaysia, and Brunei will arrive tomorrow. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will also visit Gyeongju, even though the UAE is not an APEC member.
