Chiang Mai: The New Year Festival, known as Songkran Lanna, has officially commenced in the heart of Chiang Mai, bringing with it a vibrant display of Lanna culture. The celebration is marked by the unique spectacle of a lady riding a pedicab, a sight exclusive to Thailand. The moat surrounding Chiang Mai and the Thapae Gate area have become central hubs for the lively Songkran water festivities.
According to Thai News Agency, residents and tourists have gathered at Thapae Gate Square to partake in the water celebrations, taking advantage of the refreshing activity amidst the intense heat. Participants, armed with water guns, traverse the area on foot, motorbikes, and pickup trucks loaded with water tanks, creating a bustling scene and causing some traffic congestion.
The Lanna Songkran, or Pi Mai Muang tradition, was officially inaugurated this morning at Tha Phae Gate Square. Mr. Nirat Phongsitthaworn, the Governor of Chiang Mai Province, ceremonially poured water on a replica of the Phra Buddha Sihing Buddha. The event featured a magnificent display of Lanna culture, including the Songkran parade. This year’s parade was graced by Dr. Minna, Miss Chiang Mai 2024, who took on the role of Nang Tungsatewi, leading to a beautiful procession that attracted both Thai and international tourists.
A highlight of the Chiang Mai New Year celebration is the Miss Riding a Bicycle and Holding an Umbrella contest. This procession, moving from Thapae Road to Thapae Gate, showcases the traditional lifestyle of young Lanna women. This year, 30 contestants participated, each exhibiting not only beauty but also graceful bicycle and umbrella handling, captivating the attention of tourists.
Additionally, an important tradition of the Chiang Mai New Year is the ceremonial invitation of the Phra Buddha Sihing, a revered Buddha image of Chiang Mai, from the Lai Kham Temple. The image is placed on a royal carriage to parade around the city, allowing residents and tourists the opportunity to pour water as a form of homage. The procession includes 47 other significant Buddha images of Chiang Mai. Known as Wan Sangkhan Long, this day marks the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries, symbolizing the end of the old year and preparation for the new year.
