Bangkok: "Somkid" explains that the Entertainment Complex is not a free casino, urging coalition parties to understand each other and not to talk differently. He emphasizes the need for a rational discussion, acknowledging the presence of gambling across the country, but believes it will not lead to civil unrest against the government.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somkid Chuekong, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs, addressed concerns regarding the petition opposing the entertainment complex project. He clarified that the project should not be confused with free casinos, emphasizing that the casino aspect constitutes only 10% of the overall plan. The complex is envisioned as a hub for tourism, featuring shopping malls, conference halls, concert stages, and exhibition spaces. He urged political parties to refrain from misunderstandings, as the initiative is aligned with government policies to boost tourism.
Mr. Somkid assured the public that the entertainment complex is not synonymous with free casinos. He acknowledged the widespread nature of gambling in Thailand and emphasized the need for government control and taxation to curb corruption. He highlighted the potential benefits of the project, stressing that while it has both pros and cons, efforts will be made to mitigate disadvantages. He called for public trust in the government's intentions and reassured that the elected government aims to benefit the populace.
Addressing those opposing the project, Mr. Somkid called for reasoned and logical discussions, urging them not to base their arguments solely on Thailand's Buddhist identity. He pointed out the pervasive nature of gambling, including illegal dens and online platforms, stressing the need for regulation. He emphasized the government's intention to manage the issue without exacerbating corruption or public inconvenience. He acknowledged potential losses but emphasized the importance of understanding the modern world's challenges, particularly with social media.
Regarding fears of protests escalating against the government, Mr. Somkid expressed confidence that it would not reach such levels. He mentioned discussions with senior government figures and highlighted the inclusive study of the draft bill on entertainment venue operations by the House of Representatives, which involved all political parties. This, he noted, indicates a political understanding of contemporary societal contexts.
