Narathiwat: Officials in Narathiwat Province are investigating two separate shooting incidents, one involving the killing of a police officer at Chanae Police Station and the other involving injuries to teachers and volunteers during a sepak takraw competition. It is estimated that at least 10 perpetrators were involved in the police station shooting. The deceased officer's wife expressed her grief, unable to accept the loss.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident at Chanae Police Station involved perpetrators who opened fire on police officers during a flag-raising ceremony. The shooting led to a 15-minute exchange of gunfire, resulting in the death of Pol. S.T.O. Abdulleh Makasen, 30, and serious injuries to Pol. S.T.O. Chettha Phromrat, 33. The community gathered to mourn Abdulleh, who was laid to rest at a local graveyard. His wife, Ms. Nuthuda, shared her struggles in facing the future without her husband, especially with a young son and another child on the way.
Authorities are actively collecting evidence to apprehend the perpetrators, believed to be members of a violent group led by Abdulleh Bula, known for evading multiple arrest warrants. The attackers reportedly used an M16 rifle from a hidden position behind a local shop to shoot at the police officers, leaving behind significant evidence, including over 100 bullet casings.
In the separate incident at the sepak takraw competition, six perpetrators on motorcycles targeted a group of Ko Sathon Subdistrict Protection Volunteers and teachers, resulting in four injuries. The injured include two volunteers and two teachers, one of whom, Mr. Muhammad Sukree, sustained a critical chest wound. The perpetrators were described as lacking professional training, evidenced by their inaccurate shooting.
Security forces, including the southern Marine Corps Special Forces Task Force and the Royal Thai Navy, are working to locate the suspects. The authorities have identified two potential motives for the attacks: personal disputes and security concerns. The investigation is ongoing as officials strive to ensure justice and prevent further violence.
