Senate Military Committee Urges Prime Minister to Prioritize National Interests Amid Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: The Senate Military Committee has called upon the Prime Minister to prioritize the country's interests following recent tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. The committee, led by General Sawat Tasana, expressed concerns over Thailand's current stance, suggesting it is trailing behind Cambodia in addressing the conflict.

According to Thai News Agency, General Sawat Tasana, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs and State Security, led a joint press conference addressing the ongoing skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian troops in Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. General Sawat emphasized the need for Thailand to take decisive action to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing dissatisfaction with Cambodia's perceived insincerity and attempts to gain an advantage over Thailand.

General Sawat's statement highlighted the impact of the border tensions on Thai citizens, urging the government to consider national interests foremost. The Senate Military Committee supports peaceful negotiations through bilateral mechanisms to resolve the conflict, emphasizing the importance of protecting national interests across all dimensions. The committee praised the efforts of Thai soldiers for their sacrifice and adherence to peaceful principles while expressing concern for the safety of citizens residing along the border.

General Sawat underscored the need for unified cooperation across all sectors, including the government, parliament, military, and media, to address the border dispute effectively. Upcoming plans include a visit by the Senate, led by Mr. Mongkol Surassajja and General Kriangkrai Srirak, to the border areas to observe the situation and support soldiers through the 'Senate Meets the People' project.

During the conference, General Sawat responded to inquiries regarding Thailand's position relative to Cambodia, stressing the importance of collaboration among security and foreign affairs sectors. He also addressed questions about the potential involvement of the Shinawatra family with Cambodia, reiterating the priority of safeguarding Thailand's interests and sovereignty.

As a gesture of support, the committee prepared to distribute amulets to soldiers, including amulet images, a cloth of Luang Por Ruesi Lingdam, and amulets of Luang Por Ruay, to boost morale. The committee also planned to present special amulets, Phra Kring Phairinat, to military leaders, including General Bunsin Phadklang and General Phana Klaewplodthuk.
