Royal Thai Army Responds to Cambodia’s Obstruction of Barbed Wire Installation

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has addressed recent tensions involving Cambodian interference with the installation of barbed wire at Ban Nong Chan, affirming that the operation was conducted within Thai territory and does not represent an escalation of the ongoing dispute. They highlighted Cambodia's persistent violations of MOU 43 and its lack of engagement with Thailand's proposals to collaboratively manage the contested area.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident on August 25, 2015, prompted a response from Lieutenant General Malee Socheata, spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Defense. She clarified that Cambodians had obstructed Thai soldiers from laying barbed wire in Ban Nong Chan, a region claimed by Thailand. In contrast, Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suwaree outlined several points to reinforce Thailand's stance.

Firstly, regarding accusations from Cambodia that Thai soldiers attempted to clandestinely install barbed wire in Chok Chey Village, Major General Suwaree confirmed that the area is within Thai sovereignty. He noted that Cambodia has encroached upon this territory for over two decades, with the problem persisting since it served as a refuge for Cambodians fleeing conflict.

Secondly, Major General Suwaree addressed calls from Cambodia for Thailand to honor a ceasefire agreement made during an RBC meeting on August 22, 2025, where both parties agreed not to expand the territorial dispute. He emphasized that Thailand's actions aim to address the existing disputed area, which it has consistently protested for over ten years under MOU 43-a matter that Cambodia has neglected.

Lastly, in response to Cambodia's assertion that the issue should be resolved through the JBC mechanism as per the MOU 2000, Major General Suwaree stated that Thailand remains ready to utilize the Joint Boundary Commission to resolve the dispute. However, he criticized Cambodia for breaching MOU 43 by allowing settlement and construction in the disputed area, which has led to a significant community development. Thailand has consistently protested these actions, asserting that parts of the area are clearly within Thai territory.

The Royal Thai Army reiterated its commitment to peacefully resolving border issues through signed agreements, while also stressing the need to address Cambodia's repeated violations. Thailand remains prepared to share factual information and collaborate with the international community to ensure understanding and peace in accordance with international principles.
