Royal Plant Series: Exploring the Queen Sirikit Varieties

Bangkok: Let's delve into the captivating world of plants named "Queen Sirikit," a prestigious title bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, on four different types of vibrant plants.

According to Thai News Agency, the Mussaenda Queen Sirikit is a notable hybrid plant developed by the University of the Philippines. This variety, a cross between Mussaenda 'Dona Luz' and Mussaenda philippica A. Rich. var. aurorae Sulit, was granted its royal name during the visit of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother to the Philippines in 1963.

The Donya Queen Sirikit is a shrub that grows between 1 to 3 meters tall, featuring single, oppositely arranged leaves that are oval and pointed. The young leaves are covered with soft hairs. This plant blooms with clusters of flowers at the shoot tips. The sepals are large and light pink with red edges, while the yellow petals form a tube at the base and separate into five triangular lobes at the tip. Due to its ease of cultivation and cost-effectiveness, it is frequently used as an ornamental plant.
