Bangkok: Region 2 Army Commander has issued directives concerning the operation of border checkpoints and trade relaxation points along the Thai-Cambodian border. The measures, effective from June 7, 2025, are designed to ensure the safety of citizens amidst potential military escalations.
According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, Commander of the 2nd Army Area, has empowered the Suranaree Force to regulate the opening and closing of border crossings. The directive is part of the Royal Thai Army's strategy to maintain peace and security in the region. The order mandates immediate closure of checkpoints should military clashes occur or if there is a significant increase in Cambodian troops.
The Suranaree Force has been assigned several key responsibilities. They have the authority to control the movement at border crossings, preventing unauthorized entry and exit of individuals and goods. This includes the restriction of military equipment exports while allowing essential goods and humanitarian assistance under strict regulations. Specific measures are in place to close border points in case of heightened tensions, ensuring the safety of both countries' citizens.
The order details specific operational times and conditions for several border crossings. For instance, the Aun Ma Channel in Ubon Ratchathani Province operates as a trade relaxation point on Thursdays, allowing limited entry for market activities. Similarly, Chong Sai Taku and Chong Sangam have defined operational days and hours, with strict regulations on goods and vehicle movements.
In the event of a military clash or significant troop movements, commanders are authorized to take immediate action, including closing border points and cutting off power supplies if necessary. These measures aim to prevent any adverse impact on local communities and maintain regional stability.
The directive underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in managing border security, particularly in areas prone to military tensions. The strategy reflects a commitment to safeguarding citizens while facilitating necessary economic and humanitarian activities.
