Region 1 Army Prepared to Tackle Transnational Crime Across Myanmar-Cambodia Borders

Kanchanaburi: The 1st Army Region commander has expressed readiness to embrace the government's policy aimed at suppressing transnational crime, with particular focus on the Myanmar-Cambodia borders. Despite their geographical differences, these areas face similar challenges related to call center gangs and drug trafficking. The commander is also keen to enhance maritime force capabilities in Kanchanaburi, following reports of illegal entries bypassing land checkpoints.

According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant General Amorn Boonsuya, Commander of the 1st Army Region, visited the water operations center in Kanchanaburi Province, which is under the jurisdiction of the Lat Ya Task Force, Surasee Force. His visit was in line with the government's directive to address border crimes, drug suppression, and environmental concerns such as forest fires and pollution. An integrated meeting is scheduled to take place with various stakeholders including the provincial governor, Kanchanaburi Provincial Police, and departments like the Royal Forest Department and Immigration Bureau, to strategize on these missions.

The water operation center is crucial in preventing illegal immigration, with individuals using alternative routes such as the Vajiralongkorn Dam to avoid established land checkpoints. The Marine Operation Center has been instrumental in intercepting suspects, with over 200 arrests made this year. Lieutenant General Boonsuya emphasized the importance of equipping officers with protective gear, particularly for nighttime operations, to enhance their safety and interception capabilities.

Concerns remain high for areas along the border, especially Sangkhla Buri and Thong Pha Phum districts, known for high rates of illegal immigration. The establishment of the 17th Border Patrol Police by the Narcotics Suppression Command is a strategic move to bolster efforts in controlling drug-related activities along the Western Border. The commander plans to discuss this initiative further in an upcoming meeting.

Plans are underway to propose additional resources to the government, including enhancements to boat engines and lighting equipment, to improve nighttime detection and interception. There is also a focus on bolstering the water operations center's infrastructure to withstand adverse weather conditions.

The commander highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns to prevent Thai nationals from falling prey to call center scams and internet frauds. Sharing real-life experiences of victims can serve as a deterrent and provide crucial information to the public.

The commander noted the varying nature of offenses across regions, with the Burapha Force and Surasee Force facing similar challenges but differing in severity and operational conditions. While the Burapha Force area presents an open, flat terrain conducive to illegal crossings, the Surasee Force area is mountainous, requiring different strategies for control. Despite these challenges, significant arrests have been made on both fronts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
