Prime Minister Schedules Meeting to Address US Tax Issue

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has called for a meeting on April 8th to address the resolution of the United States' import tax on Thai goods.

According to Thai News Agency, Jirayu Huangsap, an advisor to the Prime Minister and government spokesman, mentioned that some opposition parties recently proposed the formation of a special task force to tackle the US tax issue, despite the government's ongoing efforts to resolve it since before Donald Trump's presidency.

Jirayu confirmed that under Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the government has been monitoring trade measures with the United States since the end of last year. He emphasized that the government had already established a US Trade Policy Working Group on January 6, 2025, anticipating significant changes. This group includes Chief Policy Advisor Pansak Vinyarat, Policy Advisor Supavut Saicheua, Permanent Secretary of Commerce Wutthikrai Leewiraphan, and several other key officials.

The government has also devised guidelines for public-private sector cooperation to manage the impacts of US trade measures. The Prime Minister announced on April 3rd that the government is prepared to engage with the US to adjust the trade balance fairly. Furthermore, the committee is working with the private sector to modify production structures, reduce costs, and enhance the competitiveness of Thai industries.

Efforts have been made to support Thai exporters affected by the US tax measures and to identify new markets to minimize dependency on a single market. The Prime Minister has been actively monitoring these efforts for over four months. The upcoming meeting at the Thai Khu Fah Building will include all relevant ministers and government agency heads. Jirayu reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring fair trade balance adjustments with minimal impact on affected sectors and expressed gratitude to opposition parties for their input.
