Prime Minister Responds to Debt Purchase Proposal by Former Leader

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has expressed no objection to the idea of purchasing citizens' debt, describing it as a well-intentioned suggestion from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She emphasized that the proposal should not yet be politicized as it must undergo several steps, including Cabinet and parliamentary processes.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra addressed the proposal made by Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra regarding the idea of removing people's debt from the banking system. She noted that Mr. Thaksin, a businessman with a keen interest in economic matters, has previously discussed such debt issues. She stressed that the proposal is well-meaning and should be considered seriously only after it passes through necessary government channels and discussions.

When questioned about the feasibility of the proposal, given the current burdens on the government, the Prime Minister stated that the populace may find hope in such ideas. However, she added that realizing the proposal would require consultations with advisors, ministers, and herself to devise a practical solution. The involvement of the private sector remains uncertain at this point, and the Prime Minister expressed a desire for any beneficial ideas to materialize.

Responding to observations that significant proposals often originate from Mr. Thaksin rather than herself, Ms. Paetongtarn humorously asked if it should be taken seriously. She reiterated the importance of prioritizing national benefit over personal recognition, suggesting that good ideas should be implemented regardless of personal acclaim.

The Prime Minister refuted suggestions that the timing of these discussions might be an attempt to overshadow upcoming debates. She dismissed the notion of making statements solely for political cover-ups, indicating that the focus should remain on the substance of the policies rather than political maneuvering.

As discussions about the debt proposal continue, the Prime Minister indicated that the outcome would hinge on the voting results, reflecting on the necessity for sound policies to gain approval.
