Bangkok: The Prime Minister has directed the Cabinet to take decisive action against e-cigarettes, appointing Minister Jiraporn Sindhuphrai to spearhead efforts with relevant agencies to tackle the issue comprehensively and report results within 15 days. Additionally, the Prime Minister has called on the Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce to develop both short-term and long-term measures to boost farmers' incomes without heavy reliance on subsidies.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangtrakul, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office, disclosed that during a recent cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister addressed the increasing issue of e-cigarettes, particularly among the youth. Reports from Khan Na Yao Police Station and Khok Kham Police Station in Bangkok highlighted the proliferation of e-cigarette shops, prompting the Prime Minister to order relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Interior, and the Royal Thai Police, to intensify law enforcement. Despite previous efforts, the problem persists, leading to the appointment of Minister Jiraporn to oversee the formulation of stricter laws and penalties.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of the situation, expressing personal concern due to having children and urging immediate action.
The Prime Minister also turned his attention to agricultural issues, inviting key ministers to evaluate and address the declining prices of major crops such as paddy rice, cassava, and palm oil. The Prime Minister urged the development of appropriate breeds, technology adoption, and market research as part of a long-term strategy to stabilize farmers' incomes, reducing the need for substantial government subsidies.
Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the plight of fishermen affected by previous government policies aimed at reducing illegal fishing. He instructed the Department of Fisheries to propose compensation measures for affected fishing boat owners, ensuring compliance with international regulations while addressing the fishermen's grievances.
