Bangkok: The Prime Minister has confirmed that recent negotiations concerning the Thai-Cambodian border have been conducted smoothly, adhering to a peaceful approach. This follows discussions with the Cambodian leadership, ensuring that the process remains calm and orderly. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also confirmed that the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) meeting scheduled for June 14 will proceed as planned.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, speaking after a cabinet meeting, highlighted the government's efforts over the past week to address the border situation. The government, in collaboration with various sectors, has maintained a peaceful and orderly approach to the resolution of conflicts. This has involved coordination by security agencies, particularly local military units, under the framework of bilateral cooperation and adherence to international law.
The Prime Minister emphasized that discussions have taken place with both General Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Privy Council and President of the Cambodian Senate. These efforts have facilitated peaceful negotiations, preventing violent clashes.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated that the JBC meeting on June 14 has been confirmed at all levels with the foreign ministries of both countries. The meeting is assured to take place, indicating continued diplomatic engagement.
Regarding border management, measures have been put in place to regulate the opening and closing times of the border, ensuring that international trade is not disrupted. This approach prevents permanent closure, which could adversely affect local populations.
