Postal Union Demands Action on Delayed Registration Impacting Thai Workers’ Welfare

Bangkok: The Postal Union has petitioned the Labor Committee to consider the union selection process, which has been delayed for over 10 months. The Postal Workers' Union petitioned the Labor Committee that the registration of the Department of Welfare, which has been delayed for more than 10 months after union elections, has impacted the administration and welfare of tens of thousands of Thai postal workers nationwide.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Srisatphong Kiewkhong, Chairman of the House of Representatives' Labor Committee, represented Mr. Korn-Ek Kanchanakit, leader of the New Labor Group that protects Thailand Post, requesting follow-up on the progress of the registration of the Thailand Post Public Company Limited State Enterprise Labor Union. Mr. Korn-ek stated that he came today in his capacity as a member of the Thailand Post Labor Union to follow up on the registration of the state enterprise labor union of Thailand Post, which held elections in November 2024. The Election Commission, which was established as administrator and has already certified the election results, is responsible for the New Labor Group that supports Thailand Post. The group submitted the election results to the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare, Ministry of Labor, after the elections. Ten months have passed since the election, and they have not yet received registration from the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare's re gistrar. He has been following up on the matter and has found no progress. Therefore, he has come to request the Labor Commission to assist in investigating the issues.

The union has urged the Department of Welfare to expedite registration for the union's executive board, as there are currently only 17 members remaining. In September, some members will retire and some will be transferred to administrative positions. This will result in a quorum, which will prevent union management from being carried out. This could lead to damage to the union, such as approval of financial assistance for deceased members or their families, payment of union staff salaries, and approval of union entry and exit.

Mr. Srisutphong Kiewkhong, Chairman of the House of Representatives' Labor Committee, stated that regarding the establishment of state enterprise unions, there are several places where elections have been held and certification has been delayed, such as TOT. He will accept the matter and invite the Director-General of the Department of Welfare to explain why certification has been delayed for 10 months. He believes the matter is not complicated and will allow the Thailand Post Union, with its tens of thousands of members, to continue its operations.
