Pattani: Two police officers from Yarang Police Station were tragically shot dead while on duty in the Yarang District of Pattani Province. The officers were ambushed on the night of February 19, 2015, in an alley behind the vehicle inspection station in Village No. 3, Yarang Subdistrict.
According to Thai News Agency, the officers, identified as Police Senior Sergeant Major Decha Khiawkaew, 35, and Police Senior Sergeant Major Songchai Chanthraphap, 23, were found with multiple gunshot wounds to their torsos and heads. The assailants attacked the officers who were patrolling the area on a motorcycle, leaving the vehicle overturned and several bullet casings scattered at the scene.
Authorities quickly sealed off the area, transporting the bodies to Yarang Hospital. The following morning, rangers continued to guard the site, preventing unauthorized access while awaiting a forensic investigation. Initial reports suggest that the officers were providing routine security when they were ambushed by at least two suspects hidden in the dense roadside vegetation, armed with various weapons. The attack is believed to be the work of insurgents aiming to create unrest.
Provincial Police Region 9 have praised the officers for their bravery and expressed condolences to their families. They have vowed to pursue the perpetrators and ensure they face justice. Further updates on the investigation are anticipated as the situation develops.
