PM to Hold Informal Talks with Myanmar to Address Chiang Rai Flooding

Kuala Lumpur: The Prime Minister is set to engage in informal discussions with Myanmar to address flooding issues in Chiang Rai. She expressed optimism that the situation would improve swiftly, having prepared since the previous year.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, commented on the flood situation in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, and the contaminants in the Kok River before departing for the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She stated that orders had been issued regarding the contaminants, although further details needed examination. Informal discussions have taken place, and a committee has been established to address the matter. The flood situation has shown improvement, with a kitchen set up to assist the affected residents. Reports indicate no fatalities, and the situation has improved rapidly due to lessons learned from last year. The Prime Minister emphasized that the goal is to prevent severe flooding and alleviate past occurrences, intending to mitigate any future disasters.

Ms. Paethongtarn highlighted the efforts made during the rainy season, such as dredging canals since last year's floods, which have significantly reduced the severity of the current floods. She mentioned an agreement with Myanmar regarding a 20-kilometer water route, which has commenced, though Myanmar's progress was delayed due to earthquakes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the military have coordinated efforts and are prepared to proceed. The Prime Minister plans to engage in informal discussions during the ASEAN Summit to expedite problem-solving and ensure timely water drainage, preventing a recurrence of last year's impact on the population.
