PM 2.5 Dust Levels Surge Beyond Standards in 60 Provinces, Expected to Rise Until 27 January

Bangkok: The Pollution Control Department reported that PM 2.5 dust levels have surpassed the standard in 60 provinces, with high levels forecasted to persist until January 27. Authorities are mobilizing efforts to address the issue, urging the public to monitor their health and adhere to guidelines from the Ministry of Public Health.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Priyaporn Suwannaket, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, highlighted that PM 2.5 dust levels remain above standard in numerous regions. The primary factors include unfavorable meteorological conditions for dust dispersion, stagnant air near the surface, low ventilation, and an increase in hotspots both domestically and in neighboring countries.

Data from January 22, 2025, indicates that 60 provinces, including Pathum Thani, Bangkok, and Nonthaburi, have exceeded the acceptable PM 2.5 limits. Other affected provinces span across various regions, including northern, northeastern, central, and western areas, with readings ranging from 14.5 to 94.0 µg/m3. Bangkok and its vicinity also recorded high levels, between 45.7 and 85.0 µg/m3.

Forecasts for January 23-29 predict a rise in PM 2.5 levels, particularly in the northern, northeastern, and eastern regions, as well as Bangkok and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the southern region remains stable.

The Director-General noted an uptick in agricultural burning, necessitating stricter controls. Agencies are collaborating to enhance monitoring and reduce the impact of fine dust particles. In Bangkok, measures such as the Low Emission Zone, restricting large trucks from entering certain areas, and extending the Work From Home initiative aim to mitigate dust levels.

The Pollution Control Department calls for public cooperation in reducing road traffic by working from home or using public transport. Additionally, it urges against open burning to help alleviate the PM 2.5 situation. The public, especially vulnerable groups, is advised to prioritize health, limit outdoor activities, and use protective gear when necessary.
